His legacy extends beyond academia through the scientists he mentored, the books he published, and the patents he secured, all of which have propelled advancements in the food industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A graduate of Tec de Monterrey with a Ph.D. from Texas A&amp;M University, Serna Sald\u00edvar bridged the gap between academia and industry, driving innovative solutions to tackle nutritional challenges in Mexico and beyond. His contributions earned him the <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/national-science-award-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 National Science Award<\/a> and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Sonora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2013, he received the prestigious \u201cInsignia\u201d category of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/romulo-garza-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R\u00f3mulo Garza Award<\/a> and later won the prize again for his book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.elsevier.com\/books\/corn\/serna-saldivar\/978-0-12-811971-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Corn: Chemistry and Technology<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"B-Side of Professor Sergio Serna\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2rR78s-vXgo?start=4&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Exceptional Human Being<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Janet Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>, Associate Dean for Faculty Development at the School of Engineering and Sciences, described Serna Sald\u00edvar as \u201cthe most exceptional person I have ever met on this planet. While he may no longer be with us physically, his legacy as a scientist, leader, and human being lives on in the many who stand where they are today because of his dedication, determination, and generous heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scientific and academic communities mourn his passing, but his influence in nutrition and biotechnology will continue to shape future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jorge E. Valdez<\/strong>, Director of Internationalization and Outreach at TecSalud and scientific editor of <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>, described Serna as \u201cexemplary in his academic and scientific work\u2014a true benchmark in biotechnology. He was an outstanding mentor, always generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. Warm, approachable, and humble. A devoted family man.\u201d He added, \u201cWe will miss him. It was a privilege to have crossed paths at Tec de Monterrey during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientific Community Mourns the Passing of Dr. Sergio Serna, a Pillar in Food Science and Technology<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Daniel Jacobo<\/strong>, Dean of Research at the School of Engineering and Science (EIC), shared heartfelt words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, we bid farewell to Dr. Sergio Serna, a cornerstone in food science and technology whose passion and dedication left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His relentless research efforts transformed nutrition and health for countless individuals, establishing him as a key reference in his field. Moreover, he was pivotal in advancing research within our institution, significantly positioning Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey as a leader in food and health sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobo described him as \u201calways kind, cheerful, and respectful, with a genuine calling to help others. His willingness to share knowledge, enthusiasm for science, and warmth made him an unparalleled mentor and example to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added, \u201cDr. Serna was more than a mentor\u2014an academic father whose guidance and inspiration shaped my professional journey.
