{"id":168379,"date":"2025-03-06T15:04:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T21:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=168379"},"modified":"2025-03-12T10:56:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T16:56:42","slug":"the-matilda-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/the-matilda-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"Sisterhood in Academia: The Matilda Chair Aims to Empower Women in STEM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Closing the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/day-of-women-and-girls-in-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remains a significant challenge<\/a>, as women continue to be underrepresented in these fields. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siilmi-catedramatilda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Matilda Chair<\/strong><\/a> is working to drive progress toward equity through solidarity and support networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/info-lab.org.ar\/prensa\/novedades\/188-se-constituyo-la-catedra-matilda-y-las-mujeres-en-ingenieria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Founded in 2020<\/a>, the initiative consists of a group of individuals\u201490% women and 10% men\u2014from 18 countries, including Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. Their goal is to increase the visibility of women in STEM, inspire future generations, and support the retention and professional growth of women pursuing these disciplines in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2023, women accounted for only 28% of the STEM workforce, with leadership positions still predominantly held by men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/womens-charities-sound-alarm-as-aid-cuts-hit-equality-spending-idUSL8N39O2PH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment in women\u2019s rights organizations<\/a> and gender equity initiatives has been declining since the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are certainly not where we\u2019d like to be,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/mx.linkedin.com\/in\/vianneylara\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vianney Lara<\/a>, Director of Academic Services for the Monterrey Region and an associate researcher at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education (IFE)<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey. \u201cBut we also believe that efforts have not been in vain\u2014change is happening, little by little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lara is a founding member of the Latin American Open Chair Matilda and Women in Engineering, an initiative led by the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI), the Colombian Association of Engineering Faculties (ACOFI), and the Federal Council of Engineering Deans (CONFEDI). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a \u2018women for women\u2019 issue\u2014equity benefits everyone,\u201d says Lara, a mechatronics engineer who has focused part of her research on women in STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Mesa de reflexi\u00f3n: D\u00eda de la Mujer y la Ni\u00f1a en la Ciencia\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_rmLvMNQJf4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The initiative seeks to empower Latin American women in STEM <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Latin America, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/es\/latin-america\/blog\/sesgos-codificados-la-subrepresentacion-de-las-mujeres-en-stem-en-america-latina-y-el-caribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women currently make up 40% of STEM graduates<\/a>, yet their representation drops significantly in the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While employment data in these fields is limited for the region, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector provides a glimpse of the disparity\u2014only three out of every ten employees are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor women to thrive in these fields, structural changes are necessary\u2014economic, family, social, and workplace environments must support their development,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/mx.linkedin.com\/in\/mariaileanaruiz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ileana Ruiz<\/a>, National Director of Professional Development at the School of Engineering and Sciences (EIC) at Tec de Monterrey and a member of the Matilda Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the chair\u2019s key initiatives is publishing a book\u2014now preparing for its sixth edition\u2014alongside research articles, talks, conferences, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siilmi-catedramatilda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an annual research symposium<\/a>, mentoring programs, and a podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The books feature around 40 articles reflecting on the experiences and lessons learned by Latin American women in STEM. These range from students pursuing their undergraduate degrees to seasoned professionals who have already retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <strong>the group maintains a WhatsApp community where members can share advice, stories, job openings, and recommendations related to STEM fields and gender equity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re organized into different committees\u2014the executive, communications, research, mentoring, professional practice, and vocations,\u201d Ruiz explains. \u201cWe have a system in place that allows for leadership rotation across the various teams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data-Driven Decision-Making to Achieve Their Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its many initiatives, the Chair has prioritized measuring its own impact through research, using evidence-based decision-making to continue advancing its mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/laccei.org\/LEIRD2023-VirtualEdition\/papers\/Contribution_609_final_a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent analysis<\/a> found that the greatest impact comes from the Matilda book series, followed by talks and conferences, the symposium, and the WhatsApp group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members report significant benefits in their professional growth, networking opportunities, learning about gender-related topics, and professional sisterhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most frequently mentioned words in a survey describing what the Chair means to its members included equality, sisterhood, empowerment, community, collaboration, and mentoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur work is entirely voluntary\u2014we do it out of conviction, for the love of it, because we want to,\u201d says Lara. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to find people who share the same goals and the same drive to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the researchers, the results of this analysis and the enthusiasm of the Chair\u2019s members are the strongest motivators to keep pushing forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work highlights that being part of a network of women dedicated to advancing in STEM careers is essential to making meaningful progress toward gender equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of the Matilda Chair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, the team aims to expand the Chair to include a gender equity observatory for STEM disciplines and a mentoring guide. They are also applying for funding to secure more financial support and ensure the initiative\u2019s long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need more women engineers, scientists\u2014diversity benefits us all,\u201d says Ruiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chair also seeks to increase its visibility and make all the resources it has developed over the years accessible to everyone, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the researchers extend an open invitation to men to support and participate in these efforts, emphasizing that achieving gender parity\u2014in STEM and beyond\u2014is a collective responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the end, equity benefits everyone because it broadens perspectives across the board,\u201d says Lara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
