{"id":169111,"date":"2025-04-09T19:12:14","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T01:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=169111"},"modified":"2025-04-11T14:23:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T20:23:14","slug":"conducting-research-undergraduate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/conducting-research-undergraduate\/","title":{"rendered":"The Importance of Conducting Research as an Undergraduate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cResearch is more than just publishing papers or producing articles\u2014it\u2019s about generating knowledge that reaches society,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_1366\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jorge Valdez<\/a>, Director of Strategic Relations at <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\">TecSalud<\/a> and scientific editor at TecScience. \u201cAnd at the same time, <strong>it should serve as a driving force to produce<\/strong> more research and to train researchers who will repeat this role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valdez emphasized the importance of launching research projects during <a href=\"\/en\/education-and-humanism\/ai-day-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undergraduate<\/a> studies, rather than waiting until graduate school for students to become familiar with the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This topic was the focus of a panel discussion featuring Jorge Valdez\u2014who is also a physician and Tec graduate specialized in <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/science-and-technology-based-entrepreneurship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ophthalmology<\/a>\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/doctoradoestudioshumanisticosccm.tec.mx\/es\/semblanza\/nohemi-lugo-rodriguez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nohem\u00ed Lugo<\/a>, a professor in the Communication undergraduate program and the Digital Humanities master&#8217;s program, as well as a researcher in <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education at the School of Humanities and Education<\/a> at Tec. They were joined by two science students with hands-on research experience and backgrounds in science communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Ep. 114 - La importancia de realizar investigaci\u00f3n desde el pregrado\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/4aI9mwxGwdLFJ0CauYKP3z?si=3e849d5f5b354121&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge-Based Learning in Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding challenge-based learning models applied to research, Valdez explained that this approach brings education closer to real-world applications by presenting problems that require knowledge to solve or improve conditions\u2014and learning through that process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her part, Lugo noted that research in the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/education-and-humanism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanities<\/a> and social sciences is oriented toward social, cultural, or political phenomena and aims to <strong>understand the lived realities of different social groups.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a form of research deeply tied to generating social change, creating public policy, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">educational innovation<\/a>\u2014sometimes even peacebuilding processes, gender equity, or improving quality of life for people with disabilities,\u201d Lugo explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"5 consejos para saltar del laboratorio al mercado\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ckPtTyEquLg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles are available in English.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Approaching Research with Passion and Curiosity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Lugo agreed that research challenges can be intellectually stimulating, she also warned that they can pose emotional hurdles and expose biases about scientific work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor instance, at first students tend to think of it as something boring\u2026 usually in earlier academic stages, we haven\u2019t taught research <strong>through passion and curiosity<\/strong>,\u201d Lugo observed. \u201cI\u2019ve spent years trying to figure out how to bring research closer to students in a more motivational way, regardless of the challenge\u2014because sometimes those challenges feel like they\u2019re imposed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One strategy that\u2019s worked well for her is connecting projects to <strong>real-world problems<\/strong> that matter to students, whether stemming from their own communities or personal feelings of concern, indignation, or curiosity about the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve discovered, after teaching qualitative methods to four different majors and then teaching communication research methods, is that <strong>performing research and becoming a scientist<\/strong> helps break the idea that it\u2019s boring, that \u2018I can\u2019t do it,\u2019 and instead links it to social change,\u201d the professor explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making an Impact from the Lab<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emilio Venegas, a sixth-semester Biosciences student, began conducting research back in high school with a thesis on biological systems in rats. Thanks to that early experience,<strong> he joined a research project<\/strong> at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> at just 21, <strong>studying cell cultures <\/strong>to better understand breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I can get deeper into this biological field where impact is being made\u2014even from a lab, without working with patient samples\u2014we can still uncover the mechanisms behind diseases and treatments, as well as how they affect different molecules or tumor characteristics. I honestly found that fascinating and learned so much along the way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Luisa Liceaga, an eighth-semester Food Engineering student, recently completed a research stay at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, focusing on environmentally friendly techniques to analyze the stability of edible oils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had the chance to run some experiments on my own, and <strong>that gave me the confidence to propose a hypothesis and an experimental plan<\/strong>\u2014and then actually carry it out,\u201d Liceaga said. \u201cIn my case, it really helped confirm that what I thought I liked is truly what I want to do. They even offered me the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in the same lab.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Science Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside their early lab experiences, both Emilio and Luisa emphasized how vital it is to <strong>write, communicate, and share <\/strong>research findings\u2014even if it doesn\u2019t always come naturally to them or to many scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the end, science communication is what fuels the entire <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/high-impact-interdisciplinary-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific community<\/a>.<strong> It\u2019s what might inspire someone else<\/strong> to continue your research, to take a method or a piece of what you did, improve on it, and apply it to their own field,\u201d Emilio explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Luisa, who\u2019s contributed sections to research papers in various projects, it felt like a valuable opportunity to clearly convey what had been discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat moment when you put the puzzle pieces together and try to express them in a way that others in your field can understand\u2014I find that really rewarding,\u201d Luisa added. \u201cSharing with others who are also making efforts in the same research area feels <strong>incredibly fulfilling<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Lugo mentioned that, in her experience, <strong>students can already produce high-quality research papers<\/strong> as early as their third semester\u2014even within five-week challenge periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned that the top priority has to be on <strong>sharing and communicating<\/strong>,\u201d said Lugo, who also highlighted the role of professors in encouraging outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valdez, meanwhile, stressed the value of writing in different formats, pointing out that writing helps researcher<strong>s organize their ideas, give them coherence, and develop a rhythm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHemingway wrote and wrote out of habit, he used to say, because it had to be done\u2014not waiting for the muse to show up. He said it was something to do every day. And <strong>it\u2019s the same for scientists:<\/strong> we have to sit down and write the paper,\u201d Valdez remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For him, writing a paper is also crucial as a collective process\u2014especially when involving people from different disciplines and levels of experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNowadays, most of us operate more like small communities of hands-on learning. <strong>That lone scientist you see in movies\u2014I\u2019ve never seen that<\/strong> in real life, though it\u2019s often romanticized\u2026 And today, students earn their place through their involvement, enthusiasm, and contributions,\u201d Valdez reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, both academics agreed on the importance of <strong>\u201cwriting for the general public<\/strong>\u201d\u2014that is, promoting science communication using appropriate methods so that people without a scientific background can understand and engage with the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
