The study, which surveyed 1,448 adults and 200 minors, was conducted by a team of approximately 80 people, including researchers and field interviewers. Among the most striking findings: 88% of participants reported experiencing at least one <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/9-out-of-10-mexicans-experienced-adverse-childhood-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adverse childhood experience.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Cuando la infancia deja cicatrices: el costo oculto del estr\u00e9s t\u00f3xico\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3BRJrihqwdo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Subtitles Available in English<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The results, published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanam\/article\/PIIS2667-193X(25)00102-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Lancet,<\/a><\/em> underscore the urgent need to implement <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/second-international-early-childhood-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public policies<\/a> that mitigate the negative impacts of childhood adversity and <strong>promote positive early-life experiences<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving this study published in <em>The Lancet <\/em>is a mark of recognition and international prestige. It\u2019s one of the most respected medical journals in the world, and being featured there is a seal of quality,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_121379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julieta Rodr\u00edguez de Ita,<\/a> a pediatrician at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> and leader of the Developmental Biology and Childhood Well-being Research Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Ep. 76 - El impacto de la adversidad en la infancia y c\u00f3mo superarla\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/5QaUIuycXOZ0403Uko8KcE?si=cf32e0070173475d&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fieldwork and Measuring Positive Experiences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly 50 people were trained to conduct the interviews, as they included sensitive topics <strong>such as physical and emotional abuse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur publication reflects that adverse childhood experiences are a far-reaching public health issue. We\u2019re proud to bring the voices of Mexican children to the <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/research-in-public-policies-for-early-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global stage<\/a>,\u201d said Rodr\u00edguez de Ita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study revealed that 22% of adults had experienced more than four adversities during childhood. These individuals showed a significantly higher risk of developing <a href=\"\/en\/health\/obesity-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obesity<\/a>, hypertension, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, <a href=\"\/en\/health\/how-does-depression-affect-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depression<\/a>, or post-traumatic stress disorder. <strong>However, the study also looked at positive experiences<\/strong>: 50% of participants reported having meaningful, nurturing moments in their childhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_324864?_gl=1*4h2y4w*_ga*NzkxMjIxMjU3LjE3MTUxMTA2OTc.*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcxNTExNTAxNC4yLjEuMTcxNTExNzUyOS42MC4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniela Le\u00f3n Rojas<\/a>, a psychiatrist and professor at <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a>, led the clinical and fieldwork components of the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cFieldwork was critical. <\/strong>Since we were collecting highly sensitive data, the interviewers needed to know exactly how to ask the questions\u2014and just as importantly, how to remain composed and to act accordingly while doing so,\u201d Le\u00f3n Rojas explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/Julieta-Rodriguez-de-Ita.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/Julieta-Rodriguez-de-Ita.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/Julieta-Rodriguez-de-Ita.jpg 549w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/Julieta-Rodriguez-de-Ita-300x273.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Julieta Rodr\u00edguez de Ita leads the Developmental Biology and Childhood Well-being Research Group. (Photo: Tec de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biological Sample Collection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by the Tec de Monterrey <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/center-for-early-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Early Childhood<\/a> and the FEMSA Foundation, the study went beyond surveys and questionnaires. The team also collected<strong> biological samples<\/strong>\u2014blood, urine, hair, and feces\u2014to explore how early experiences are reflected in the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe aimed to understand the biological impact. <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/stress-in-primary-child-care-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caregivers<\/a> or parents provided consent. For example, we collected hair samples to measure cortisol, a well-known<strong> biomarker of stress<\/strong>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_170818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fabiola Castorena<\/a>, an expert in translational medicine and professor at TecSalud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specially trained fieldworkers collected the samples using equipment designed to maintain the proper temperature. According to Castorena, Tec de Monterrey medical students also took part in analyzing the samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These biological samples are part of the study\u2019s <strong>second phase<\/strong>, which follows the initial stage of population-level diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMeasuring biomarkers takes time and a great deal of effort. We already have some preliminary results, but we expect to translate these into scientific publications later this semester and into the next,\u201d Castorena added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
