According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insp.mx\/avisos\/obesidad-principal-problema-de-salud-en-mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute of Public Health<\/a>, <strong>36.9% of adults in the country are living with obesity<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insp.mx\/avisos\/obesidad-principal-problema-de-salud-en-mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which significantly increases the risk of chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease<\/a>. It also worsens outcomes in infectious diseases such as <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> and influenza. Alarmingly, by 2030, that percentage is projected to rise to 45%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marco Antonio Rito<\/a><\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a> (IOR) at Tec de Monterrey, explains that this crisis affects more than adults\u2014it extends to children and adolescents. <strong>Mexico ranks among the countries with the highest rates of childhood obesity<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/saludpublica.mx\/index.php\/spm\/article\/view\/15842\/12570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">36.5% of children and 40.4% of adolescents are overweight or obese<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/obesity-research.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/obesity-research.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/obesity-research.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/obesity-research-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Marco Rito, IOR director. We\u2019ve recruited top talent and built research capacity across units<\/strong>. Collaboration is central to our model,\u201d Rito notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institute now includes over 70 researchers\u2014professors, postdocs, and members of the Faculty of Excellence\u2014and has produced more than 300 scientific publications, solidifying its reputation in the global research community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, IOR has secured nearly <strong>100 million Mexican pesos<\/strong> (5.1 million American dollars) in external funding to support over 30 projects. Strategic partnerships have been forged with institutions such as the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias M\u00e9dicas y Nutrici\u00f3n Salvador Zubir\u00e1n, Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile, and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Similar to a pregnancy test, the device detects leptin, a hormone linked to satiety and body fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Islet Transplantation for Diabetes Treatment<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty of Excellence member Per-Olof Berggren is working on a cutting-edge approach to transplant insulin-producing islet cells into the eye\u2019s anterior chamber. \u201cThis ambitious project could reduce patients&#8217; dependency on insulin,\u201d he explains, noting that the team is currently adapting facilities and pursuing legal approvals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Genetic Profiling of Obese Populations<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Through the\u00a0<a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\">OriGen<\/a> Project<\/span>, researchers, including Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz, aim to sequence the genomes of 100,000 Mexicans, studying regional genetic variations that influence obesity and metabolic diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breast Milk Composition and Obesity<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study explores compounds in breast milk that may help prevent obesity in both mothers and infants. Promising clinical data are already in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Affordable Anti-Obesity Drugs<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers like Gerardo Garc\u00eda and H\u00e9ctor Arreola are developing mechanisms to make medications for obesity more accessible, working with pharmaceutical companies and exploring cost-effective production processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the next five years, we aim to have several validated projects ready for patents and potential startup formation. We also plan to recruit at least 10 new obesity-focused researchers and become a key player in public health policy,\u201d Rito says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2025 International Conference on Obesity Research<br><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s IOR conference, themed <em><strong>Obesity Across the Lifespan: A Multidisciplinary Perspective<\/strong><\/em>, will take place on April 29\u201330 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/es\/agenda?_gl=1*1pxb7m*_gcl_au*MTUyMDI0NzU1MS4xNzQzMDk0NjM2*_ga*NDk5NDIxODkyLjE3NDMwOTQ2MzY.*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTc0NTUxNzUwNC40LjAuMTc0NTUxNzUwNC42MC4wLjEwNDI4OTQzNjg.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La Carreta Pavilion on Tec\u2019s Monterrey campus<\/a>. The hybrid-format event is free and open to specialists and the general public, including students, researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to show what we\u2019re doing, who we\u2019re doing it with, and where we\u2019re headed.
