{"id":169381,"date":"2025-04-29T14:31:58","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T20:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=169381"},"modified":"2025-04-30T15:47:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T21:47:40","slug":"international-conference-on-obesity-research-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/international-conference-on-obesity-research-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Solutions to Obesity Must Be Ethical, Humane, and Evidence-Based"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Obesity must be recognized as a chronic, multifactorial phenomenon<\/strong> that demands integrated responses across science, technology, nutrition, urban environments, education, psychology, and public policy, said <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/about-us\/rectors-office\">Juan <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/about-us\/rectors-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/about-us\/rectors-office\">ablo Murra<\/a><\/strong>, rector of Tec de Monterrey, during his opening remarks at the <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/congreso-internacional-de-investigacion-sobre-obesidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 International Congress on Obesity Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crucial to <strong>build solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration<\/strong>, always with <strong>an ethical, humane, and evidence-based approach<\/strong>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth edition of this congress, organized by Tec\u2019s <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a> (IOR), is being held under the theme <em><strong>Obesity and Its Impact Across the Life Cycle: A Multidisciplinary Perspective<\/strong><\/em>. The event aims to bring together experts from various fields to examine <strong>how this condition affects individuals at different stages of life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Multidisciplinary Research to Tackle Obesity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/saludpublica.mx\/index.php\/spm\/article\/view\/15863\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">37.1% of the adult population is living with obesity<\/a> (41% of women and 33% of men). Moreover, over the past two decades, the prevalence of this condition has surged by nearly 58%, shared <strong><a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/feniosky-pena-mora-first-latino-president-of-the-american-society-of-civil-engineers-asce\/\">Feniosky Pe\u00f1a-Mora<\/a><\/strong>, Executive Vice President for Research at Tec de Monterrey, during the opening of the Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that obesity is not a challenge that can be fully understood from a single perspective; rather, <strong>it is a complex phenomenon that impacts multiple stages of life and touches on various dimensions of human existence<\/strong>, ranging from biology to the social sphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, he explained that at the Institute for Obesity Research (IOR), <a href=\"\/en\/health\/obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five research units<\/a> address experimental medicine, healthy foods, integrative biology, bioengineering, and public policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are driving forward projects aimed at <strong>improving the quality of life for girls, boys, women, men, and older adults<\/strong>. This is possible thanks to the collaboration of researchers, students, and strategic partners who have turned science into a tool for transforming our realities\u2014and in this case, our health conditions,\u201d Pe\u00f1a-Mora highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Institute\u2019s projects include developing devices for <a href=\"\/en\/health\/test-obesity-in-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the early diagnosis of childhood obesity<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/health\/per-olof-berggren-wants-to-cure-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">islet transplantation to treat diabetes<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/health\/mexican-genome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">genetic studies of the Mexican population<\/a>, and initiatives to make treatments more accessible for addressing this condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/international-conference-on-obesity-research4.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/international-conference-on-obesity-research4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/international-conference-on-obesity-research4.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/international-conference-on-obesity-research4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Secretary of Health of Nuevo Le\u00f3n outlined the strategies implemented in the state to address the obesity problem, such as school-based interventions and health assessments conducted by medical personnel. (Photo: H\u00e9ctor Gonz\u00e1lez \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Public Policy to Address Obesity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Obesity represents <strong>a serious and growing public health issue<\/strong>. It begins at an early age, affects both children and adults, and is linked to chronic and cardiovascular diseases that can be fatal, said Alma Rosa Marroqu\u00edn, Secretary of Health of Nuevo Le\u00f3n. For instance, data from the 2022\u20132024 Health and Nutrition Survey revealed <strong>a rise in the prevalence of this condition among children<\/strong> in the state, with four out of every ten boys found to be overweight. Among adults aged 40 to 49, abdominal obesity was present in 92.8% of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat means it <strong>affects nine out of ten young adults <\/strong>who are in the prime of their working lives. This will have consequences across many areas, from personal decision-making to quality of life and even their contributions to society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marroqu\u00edn pointed out that this issue stems from an obesogenic environment shaped by social, genetic, and environmental factors, as well as unhealthy eating habits. Tackling it requires strategic public policies aimed at curbing overweight and obesity\u2014such as the <strong>General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Nutrition<\/strong>, which promotes the production and consumption of nutritious foods, and the <strong>Live Healthy, Live Happy program<\/strong>, which focuses on school-based interventions. (Photo: H\u00e9ctor Gonz\u00e1lez \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2025 International Congress on Obesity Research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new definition of clinical obesity, along with other topics related to this condition, is part of the event\u2019s agenda, where projects underway at the Institute are also showcased, said Marco Rito, Director of the IOR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Congress gives us a great opportunity to highlight the kinds of research we\u2019re conducting\u2014through short talks and poster sessions\u2014not only within the Institute but also<strong> in collaboration with colleagues from institutions outside of Tec<\/strong>,\u201d Rito said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the redefinition of clinical obesity, the program includes discussions on challenges in implementing the new <strong>General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Nutrition<\/strong>, B-group vitamins, the epigenome and fetal programming, cheminformatics for drug development, and nanophotonics-based biosensors for healthcare, among other topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event features keynote lectures, panel discussions, and presentation sessions by Institute researchers.
