This can lead to an underestimation or overestimation of the effect of excessive adipose tissue accumulation in a person and, consequently, inadequate care. Recently, different groups around the world have focused on redefining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre we <strong>defining obesity correctly<\/strong>?\u201d asked <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/sites\/default\/files\/inline-files\/Leo%20%28esp%29.pdf?srsltid=AfmBOopcmxQseM7yLDg39yQOfxrUkhhw-n_7kGuvW7yTj2-vuxchbbU8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonardo Mancillas<\/a>, Clinical Director of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a> (IOR), during the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/international-conference-on-obesity-research-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Conference on Obesity Research 2025<\/a>, held at the Monterrey Campus of Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mancillas moderated the panel<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/en\/discussion-panel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Redefined Clinical Obesity: Advantages, Challenges, and the Transformative Power of Mexican Guidelines<\/a><\/em>, in which he and three experts discussed the present and future of its diagnosis and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation revolved around new documents produced by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/commissions-do\/clinical-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Lancet Commission on Definition and Diagnostic Criteria of Clinical Obesity<\/a><\/em> and the first <em><a href=\"https:\/\/openurl.ebsco.com\/EPDB%3Agcd%3A13%3A35840397\/detailv2?sid=ebsco%3Aplink%3Ascholar&amp;id=ebsco%3Agcd%3A184503609&amp;crl=c&amp;link_origin=scholar.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexican clinical practice guide for the management of overweight and obesity in adults<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an infographic summarizing its most recent work, the commission argues that although BMI is useful for identifying people at higher risk of health consequences, it cannot determine when <strong>excess body fat is a health problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the new guideline recognizes recommendations for <a href=\"\/en\/health\/obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obesity<\/a> management appropriate for the Mexican context and knowledge gaps that need to be considered to formulate a better approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDefinitions and redefinitions of complex diseases never stop because they depend largely on the entire body of knowledge surrounding them,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/en\/semblanza\/juan-eduardo-garcia-garcia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Eduardo Garc\u00eda<\/a>, former president of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"C\u00f3mo detectar la diabetes con Inteligencia Artificial\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yWnLVYeQeCw?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Redefining Obesity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mexico, obesity <strong>has increased by 42.4% from 2000 to 2018<\/strong>. Today, 36% of the population lives with it, and more than 90% of adults over 50 years of age have central obesity, according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these statistics have been constructed primarily using an elevated BMI to indicate obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this and the need to improve treatment, The Lancet proposes two new concepts: <strong>preclinical obesity<\/strong>, a condition of excess body fat associated with a variable level of health risk, but without disease, and <strong>clinical obesity<\/strong>, a chronic disease due solely to obesity, characterized by signs and symptoms of ongoing organ dysfunction and\/or a reduced ability to perform daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/4.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-169431\" style=\"width:750px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/4.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/04\/4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cDefinitions and redefinitions of complex diseases never stop because they depend largely on the entire body of knowledge surrounding them,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/en\/semblanza\/juan-eduardo-garcia-garcia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Eduardo Garc\u00eda<\/a>, former president of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology. (Photo: H\u00e9ctor Gonz\u00e1lez \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the intentions of this consensus was to provide treatment to people with <strong>serious medical consequences<\/strong> [of obesity],\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/en\/semblanza\/veronica-vazquez-velazquez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ver\u00f3nica V\u00e1zquez<\/a>, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/obesidades.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OBESIDADES A.C<\/a>. \u201cWeight loss is not a treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like V\u00e1zquez, many support this redefinition and believe it will lead to <a href=\"\/en\/health\/international-conference-on-obesity-research-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">better practices<\/a> within the medical field, including reinforcing the awareness that obesity is <strong>not a matter of willpower<\/strong> and that healthcare professionals can often stigmatize people without conducting proper medical evaluations to determine whether they are genuinely ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while some support it, others think it could be a step backward in the progress made in defining obesity as a <strong>continuum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Just being overweight creates a higher risk of <strong>mortality<\/strong>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/iorconference.tec.mx\/en\/semblanza\/emma-adriana-chavez-manzanera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emma Ch\u00e1vez<\/a>, Coordinator of the Obesity Clinic at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incmnsz.mx\/opencms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition \u201cSalvador Zubir\u00e1n.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI feel it&#8217;s a step backward in a way, by trying to oversimplify things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The first Mexican Guide for Obesity Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new guideline aims to be the first methodologically rigorous manual on obesity, designed to help healthcare professionals, patients with obesity, and decision-makers address it in the best possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a population, we have our social, cultural, and economic characteristics,\u201d said Ch\u00e1vez, who participated in developing this guideline. \u201cHaving <strong>tropicalized guidelines<\/strong> allows for recommendations to be tailored to the social context.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new treatment framework is evidence-based and <strong>patient-centered.
