{"id":169455,"date":"2025-05-02T15:51:26","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T21:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=169455"},"modified":"2025-05-08T11:10:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T17:10:34","slug":"marginalized-women-obesity-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/cities-and-prosperous-communities\/marginalized-women-obesity-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Marginalized Women: The Most Affected by Obesity and Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Social marginalization in Mexico is closely linked to metabolic inequity\u2014that is, the prevalence of conditions like obesity and diabetes\u2014explained <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_496282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Linda Aurora Morales Ju\u00e1rez<\/a>, Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the National Institute of Public Health and researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_496282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research (IOR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Marginalization<\/strong> affects not just access to <a href=\"\/es\/humano-social\/poblaciones-indigenas-gasto-en-salud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthcare services<\/a>\u2014it also shapes people\u2019s health behaviors, the environment they live in, and even certain environmental exposures,\u201d Morales pointed out during her Flash Tec Talk titled <em>\u201cMetabolic Health Inequities and Obesity in Mexican Adults: The Role of Municipal-Level Marginalization.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the IOR, Morales uses advanced data analysis to tackle complex public health challenges. Her postdoctoral research and collaborations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdata.org\/research-analysis\/gbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Burden of Disease<\/a> initiative have allowed her to contribute to health policy design that promotes global well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morales was among the scientists who took part in the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/international-conference-on-obesity-research-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 International Conference on Obesity Research<\/a>. There, she discussed strategies that\u2014when <strong>implemented at municipal level<\/strong>\u2014can offer major advantages. Even small reductions in glycated hemoglobin or average glucose levels have been shown to bring about microvascular and macrovascular health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfDe qu\u00e9 trata el Congreso Internacional de Investigaci\u00f3n sobre Obesidad 2025?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YqVC4Q339yE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three Key Findings Relevant to Marginalized Municipalities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study comparing adult obesity rates across different levels of marginalization\u2014high, medium, and low\u2014and further breaking down the data by sex and adjusting for age, <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/child-poverty-in-mexico-and-latin-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">education<\/a>, and other sociodemographic variables, Morales and her team identified three major findings about adult obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They measured <strong>obesity, self-reported diabetes, and undiagnosed diabetes<\/strong>\u2014the latter being detected during hemoglobin A1c testing in individuals unaware of their condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Generally speaking, all three levels of marginalization are equally affected. Among them, <strong>women show the highest burden of obesity,<\/strong>\u201d Morales said. \u201cWhen it comes to abdominal obesity, more than 85% of women are affected, regardless of marginalization level,\u201d while rates among men range between 71.3% and 75.2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdominal obesity is especially widespread among women, reaching nearly <strong>universal levels regardless of how marginalized their municipality is.<\/strong> While the gender gap has gradually narrowed, it remains significant in highly marginalized areas, Morales noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Rompiendo estereotipos sobre la obesidad\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zxPRtNqYMy8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undiagnosed Diabetes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking at average <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/science-communication\/socioeconomic-inequality-diabetes-prevalence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blood glucose levels<\/a> among people with diabetes, those living in highly marginalized areas had the highest averages compared to other groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-reported diabetes showed similar prevalence across all three levels of marginalization, <strong>though women were consistently more affected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a different trend emerged<strong> for undiagnosed diabetes<\/strong>: the highest rates were found in areas with the greatest marginalization, with <strong>men being more affected than women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from CONAPO, one in three Mexicans lives in a municipality with some level of marginalization\u2014either high or very high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to prioritize the most marginalized communities and recognize that governments must implement intersectoral policies to tackle marginalization on all fronts,\u201d Morales concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
