In recent years, efforts around the world have been made to ensure that early childhood is lived fully and healthily. However, most of them have focused on the first thousand days<\/strong>: from childbirth to two years of age. Two recent studies demonstrate that the next thousand days, from two to five years of age, are equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a recent series published by The Lancet<\/a>, researchers explain why it is essential to invest in this window of time, as it is a unique opportunity to promote good nutrition, learning, and health<\/strong>, both physical and mental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“During these days, we have a great opportunity to impact the well-being of our children,” said Manuel P\u00e9rez<\/a><\/strong>, director of the Center for Early Childhood<\/a> from Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey and FEMSA foundation, during his participation in the launch event for this series in the Latin American region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the participants were two of the series’ lead authors, Catherine Draper<\/a><\/strong>, associate professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and Milagros Nores<\/a><\/strong>, co-director of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER), who explained the evidence behind the importance of developing intervention programs that promote quality care during these important years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally, less than 30% of children aged three and four receive adequate care and education in low- and middle-income countries<\/strong>, such as Mexico. In this country, only 44% of children have access to early childhood care and education services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe differences are exacerbated depending on where you were born,\u201d said Adriana Gidi<\/strong><\/a>, Associate Director of the Early Childhood Center. According to her, although 30% of Mexican children live in rural areas, only 2.2% of comprehensive care centers are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
