This event\u2014one of the most prestigious global forums for architectural thought\u2014will take place from <strong>May 10 to November 23, 2025<\/strong>, under the curatorship of architect Carlo Ratti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the theme <em>Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective<\/em>, the 2025 Biennale aims to explore the role of various forms of intelligence\u2014from <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a> to community wisdom\u2014in shaping the built environment. The Tec\u2019s proposal was one of 280 chosen from over 750 submissions worldwide. (Photo: Courtesy EAAD)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architecture as a Platform for Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tec de Monterrey\u2019s proposal is far from a static exhibition; it is the result of an applied research line that weaves together design, science, and community. Its <strong>\u201cliving labs\u201d<\/strong>\u2014implemented in the states of Jalisco, Quer\u00e9taro, and Chihuahua\u2014serve as experimental environments to test territorial regeneration models rooted in interdisciplinary knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOur participation is meant to showcase how architecture, within the university setting, can serve as a critical tool for exploring new ways of inhabiting our world amid climate and social challenges,\u201d<\/strong> explained <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_38762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alfredo Hidalgo<\/a>, interim national dean of EAAD and curator of the project. \u201cThe Biennale gives us a platform to internationalize the conversation around the university\u2019s role as a generator of knowledge with real-world impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Vivir sin transporte p\u00fablico: el reto de movilidad en Paso del Norte\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l6impRm2vmo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Captions are available in English.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Living labs: A Methodological Knowledge Production <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each lab begins with a central research question: how can technological, ecological, and social knowledge be integrated into sustainable architectural solutions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer this, the teams have developed co-design strategies with local communities, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, digital technologies, and environmental and social impact assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>Chihuahua<\/strong>, under the direction of Emanuele Giorgi, the lab focuses on vulnerable communities and promotes technologies for water access, sustainable agriculture, and ecological tourism. Notable outcomes include the development of<strong> filters to remove arsenic and fluoride in Julimes<\/strong>, as well as the installation of solar-powered irrigation<strong> greenhouses monitored by drones <\/strong>in Nuevas Delicias.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Jalisco<\/strong>, the C+LAB led by Mar\u00eda Elena de la Torre operates in the area surrounding La Primavera Forest. Here, the team combines sanitation strategies, environmental education, and regenerative ecotourism. One<strong> standout case is the restoration of the Las Tortugas River<\/strong> through nature-based solutions that reconnect the local community with their ecosystem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Quer\u00e9taro<\/strong>, the NatRural Lab, headed by Carlos Cobreros, operates within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. The lab promotes models of conscious tourism, environmental education, and <strong>responsible forest use\u2014particularly in the hubs of La Barranca and Tejamanil.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re exploring how different types of intelligence\u2014collective, natural, and artificial\u2014can interact to produce meaningful architectural responses,\u201d Giorgi noted. \u201cThis approach merges applied science with community engagement to create replicable models of regenerative design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiences incorporate parametric design tools, environmental sensors, simulations, data analysis, and the documentation of local knowledge. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research From and For the Territory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What sets this project apart is its transdisciplinary approach. Faculty, students, alumni, and communities collaborate as co-researchers. \u201cRegenerative architecture is both a scientific process and an ethical commitment,\u201d said Mar\u00eda Elena de la Torre, EAAD researcher. \u201cOur labs aim to systematize community learning, integrate sustainable technologies, and generate evidence on the social and environmental benefits of participatory design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A prime example is <strong>El Mirador, <\/strong>a structure built by students in collaboration with forest rangers from La Primavera. The platform allows for the appreciation of nature through an ecologically designed structure informed by local data and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Classroom to the Field: Open Science and Experiential Learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being featured in the main exhibition, EAAD will host a separate showcase at the European Cultural Center and publish a book featuring selected student projects. Nearly 90 proposals were submitted through an internal call; <strong>19 were chosen to reflect this collective vision.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about bringing discoveries into the field, in a model that recognizes students as agents of change and communities as legitimate sources of knowledge,\u201d said <strong>Juan Pablo Murra<\/strong>, Rector for Undergraduate and Graduate Studies at Tec. \u201cThe goal is to build networks where science, technology, and local wisdom converge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_140010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carlos Cobreros<\/a>, this collective effort demonstrates how architecture can serve as a catalyst for systemic change: \u201cThe Biennale features projects that see architecture not as form, but as relationship\u2014relationship with land, with others, with life itself.\u201d<em><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/conecta.tec.mx\/es\/noticias\/nacional\/institucion\/proyecto-tec-elegido-para-la-bienal-de-venecia-de-arquitectura-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(With reporting by M\u00f3nica Torres, CONECTA)<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
