{"id":169797,"date":"2025-05-27T13:58:20","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T19:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=169797"},"modified":"2025-05-27T13:58:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T19:58:46","slug":"mexican-university-network-climate-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/climate-and-sustainability\/mexican-university-network-climate-action\/","title":{"rendered":"New Mexican University Network for Climate Action Seeks Science-Based Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A total of 21 presidents from public and private universities have officially launched the <strong>Red Mexicana de Universidades por la Acci\u00f3n Clim\u00e1tica<\/strong> (Mexican Network of Universities for Climate Action).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.itesm.mx\/Grficos\/Cumbre%20de%20Rectoras%20y%20Rectores%20de%20Universidades%20Mexicanas%20por%20la%20Acci\u00f3n%20Clim\u00e1tica\/DECLARATORIA%20%20CUMBRE%20DE%20RECTORAS%20Y%20RECTORES%20POR%20LA%20A%20CLIM\u00c1TICA%20260525.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declaration<\/a> commits the participating institutions to four key pillars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Education: To equip young people with the awareness and tools they need to face the climate crisis head-on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research: To better understand the causes and effects of climate change from across the disciplines and to develop innovative, real-world solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultural outreach: To foster collective learning, dialogue across sectors, and social inclusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Institutional commitment: To lead by example by reducing carbon footprints internally and adapting responsibly to today\u2019s challenges\u2014and those that lie ahead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the signatories are Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Benem\u00e9rita Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), El Colegio de M\u00e9xico, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the Western Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESO), Universidad An\u00e1huac, the Autonomous University of Nuevo Le\u00f3n (UANL), and the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Juan Pablo Murra<\/strong>, rector of Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, emphasized that addressing the damage caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change<\/a> is not only a complex and systemic challenge but also \u201ca public good\u2014where the benefits are collective and in the future, and the costs are individual and in the present,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the Summit of University Presidents for Climate Action\u2014held at UNAM and co-organized with Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2014Murra noted that this new network \u201cwill generate net benefits for our society, our economy, our climate security, and our Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also described the climate crisis as a <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/housing-in-monterrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wicked problem<\/a>\u2014a term used to describe issues that are hard to define, involve many interrelated causes, and don\u2019t have a single, clear solution. The goal is to generate, apply, and share knowledge and perspectives from across disciplines to better understand the root causes, effects, and future impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the aim is to build better, more effective solutions and implement them through innovation, entrepreneurship, institutional commitment, and <strong>sound public policy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murra reminded attendees that Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey has been publicly addressing the environmental and climate crisis for over 30 years and has taken various steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. (Photo: Israel P\u00e9rez Vega \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> &#8220;This Is Not an Abstract Emergency&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leonardo Lomel\u00ed, Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), described today\u2019s many socio-environmental crises as \u201ca civilizational tipping point\u201d that calls into question the very foundations of our way of life\u2014how we consume, produce, and organize as a society.<br><br>\u201cThis is not an abstract urgency, but rather an unavoidable responsibility,\u201d he stated. \u201cAs university leaders, heading institutions that educate thousands of students each year, we reaffirm that higher education must play a decisive role in the transition toward a fair, regenerative model of development\u2014one grounded in critical thinking.\u201d<br><br>Lomel\u00ed emphasized that the climate emergency is not a distant threat but a present injustice that affects people unequally. He pointed out that the most vulnerable communities are the first to suffer its consequences.<br><br>\u201cBetween 1990 and 2020, the richest 10% of the global population was responsible for 66% of the rise in global temperatures. The richest 1% alone accounts for one-fifth of total warming. In contrast, the poorest 50% contributed only 10% of emissions. This inequality is devastating,\u201d he added.<br><br>In this context, he argued, higher education institutions cannot afford to remain neutral.<br><br>\u201cThat\u2019s why this summit is so important\u2014it brings us together and urges us to renew our shared commitment. We must draw a common roadmap because isolated efforts will never be enough. We need inter-university alliances, multilevel collaboration, and local engagement.\u201d<br><br>Lomel\u00ed added that academic institutions can make concrete contributions to climate mitigation through curriculum reform that embeds sustainability, environmental ethics, and socioecological justice across all fields. He also highlighted the need to promote applied research, not just diagnostic studies, as well as to encourage student participation and agency as a driving force for change.<br><br>He closed by thanking Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey for its leadership in the summit, along with the participating institutions, faculty, and students committed to advancing this shared agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ruta Azul: A Model for Climate Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Juan Pablo Murra also shared some of the actions undertaken by Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, with special emphasis on the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/ruta-azul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ruta Azul<\/a> initiative, a project he said he was especially proud of, which began five years ago.<br><br>\u201cToday, we consume less energy than we did <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/ruta-azul-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five years ago<\/a>. Sixty percent of our energy is <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/tecsalud-hospitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable<\/a>, we use less water, send less waste to landfills, and we take better care of surrounding ecosystems,\u201d he said.<br><br>He closed with a hopeful message that resonated with fellow rectors and speakers alike:<br><br>\u201cBecause if those of us gathered here today don\u2019t believe the future can be better, we won\u2019t even try to fix it,\u201d he said.<br><br>\u201cHope comes from seeing what others are doing\u2014and today, my hope grows from seeing what my colleagues across so many universities are doing. I\u2019m truly grateful for this space, and, both personally and on behalf of Tec, I\u2019m eager to keep building together with each and every one of you,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
