The concept of human flourishing<\/a><\/strong>\u2014understood as the pursuit of individuals’ and communities’ best versions of oneself\u2014has gained relevance in Latin America, though each country approaches it from diverse cultural and academic perspectives. This is one of the key findings from the first regional mapping of academic research on this topic<\/a>, encompassing nations like Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project is led by Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/strong>, with participation from researchers at Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile, Universidad de los Andes (TRIADA), and Nossa Terra Firme<\/a>. Collaborators also include professors from Harvard University, New York University, and Baylor University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is the Project of Human Flourishing in Latin America Important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human flourishing<\/a><\/strong> is deeply connected to individual and community well-being<\/strong>, and it’s a concept studied across various disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, economics, and even environmental sciences. However, the term has often been defined through the lens of well-being<\/a> criteria from more developed countries<\/strong>, which aren’t necessarily compatible with those prevalent in Latin America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the relevance of this research lies in identifying<\/strong> the parameters and values<\/strong> associated with well-being<\/strong> in our region<\/strong>. For instance, in Mexico<\/strong>, it was found that concepts like happiness<\/a><\/strong> don’t necessarily link to economic status. Meanwhile, in the southern part of the continent, other terms referring to human flourishing<\/strong> were identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Buen vivir<\/strong> is a concept used in Andean and Amazonian countries, which is also starting to be adopted in Mexico, and it bears a strong resemblance to the concept of human flourishing. For example, in the Quechua language, the concept of Sumak Kawsay<\/strong> is gaining relevance, even appearing in political constitutions,” highlights Enrique Tam\u00e9s<\/a>, project leader and professor at EGADE Business School<\/a>‘s Department of Strategy and Leadership at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This regional mapping \u2014funded by a grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation<\/a> (TWCF)\u2014 took several years to research, employing both quantitative and qualitative methods. This involved analyzing 328,704 scientific publications<\/strong> and conducting interviews with 50 researchers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
