{"id":170304,"date":"2025-07-01T12:55:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T18:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=170304"},"modified":"2025-07-07T11:20:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T17:20:59","slug":"technology-transfer-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/technology-transfer-office\/","title":{"rendered":"When Science Becomes a Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/new-science-and-technology-based-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science-based tech companies<\/a> like <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/nanoadditives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Nano Additives<\/a>, which develops eco-friendly industrial lubricants; <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/3d-printed-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forma Foods<\/a>, a lab-grown meat producer; and <strong>Naddon<\/strong>, which uses smart nanoparticles to encapsulate medications for controlled release, are being nurtured by the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/technology-transfer-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technology Transfer Office<\/a> (DTT, for its name in Spanish) to help bring their innovations to market. Today, these companies are part of the <strong>scientific entrepreneurship ecosystem<\/strong> at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joelca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joel Cano<\/a>, interim director of the DTT, explains that the office aims to serve as an integrative mechanism so that the knowledge generated within the institution\u2014by 32 research groups across six national schools, three institutes and research centers, and the core labs\u2014can be translated into <strong>products or services that address major global challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe bring together what\u2019s being developed at Tec and look for institutional pathways to move <strong>from protecting and developing that science to creating business opportunities<\/strong> based on scientific knowledge,\u201d he says. \u201cBut we want these ventures to go beyond profitability\u2014we want them to make a real social impact in areas like education, health, obesity, or sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, <strong>the office has supported the development of 28 spin-offs<\/strong>\u2014ventures that originate from scientific projects within Tec and grow into independent startups. These companies maintain a connection to the institution through licensing agreements or equity participation, in which the investment of resources translates into ownership stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer1.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"895\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer1.png 675w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer1-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology Transfer Office<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the Technology Transfer Office<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, originally established in 2010, was restructured into a formal department within Tec de Monterrey, with new strategic functions to implement an\u00a0<strong>integration model<\/strong>\u00a0that fosters<\/span> science- and technology-based entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/technology-transfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technology transfer<\/a> model includes three pathways through which Tec\u2019s intellectual property can be transformed into real-world solutions with both social and market impact: by <strong>creating a spin-off<\/strong>, a new independent company based on a scientific project at Tec in which the institution\u2019s investment is converted into equity; through <strong>direct licensing<\/strong>, where an external company is granted the right to use the technology in exchange for royalties or usage fees; and via <strong>co-developme<\/strong>nt, in which the institution collaborates with a company to generate new technologies jointly\u2014this may involve Tec scientists working alongside company staff, or agreements for shared intellectual property rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cano explains that, on average, <strong>each spin-off produces between 2.5 and 3 licenses or licensing agreements<\/strong>, meaning that between 70 and 80 such agreements have been generated solely by science- and technology-based ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the model operates through close collaboration with associated departments, including <strong>Technology Intelligence, Business Development, Product Development, and Outreach<\/strong>. This cooperation functions as an institutional process that can be documented and replicated, and it is structured in three phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology Intelligence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In this stage, the goal is to identify <strong>which entries in the institution\u2019s intellectual property portfolio have the highest market value<\/strong>, to maximize the chances of commercial success. An ongoing evaluation is being conducted to assess the value of these records, utilizing both public and private data sources, and examining how well they align with global trends, such as longevity, artificial intelligence, and food security. \u201cWe focus more on those with <strong>market potential <\/strong>and keep two portfolios: active and on hold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the portfolio is estimated to include around 686 intellectual property entries, of which more than 300 are active\u2014that is, they have real potential for use or commercialization. In addition, the DTT (for its name in Spanish) operates an early-stage connection tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceconnexion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science Connexion<\/a>, a platform featuring over 2,500 scientific and non-scientific profiles aimed at linking solutions with challenges through a system of problem statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Product Development<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This phase involves selecting the projects with the greatest potential and supporting them through applications to internal and external funding calls, giving them <strong>access to resources that help prove their viability<\/strong> and take their first steps toward real-world application. With this support, teams can develop minimum viable products (MVPs) and conduct tests outside the lab. The process also focuses on raising their technical maturity, or TRL (Technology Readiness Level), and validating their business models. The support includes technical and financial advisory services from specialized firms. \u201cWe help them figure out: hey, if you built a business around this technology, how much could you actually sell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Venture Creation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the final phase of the model, where the DTT (for its name in Spanish) supports scientists in building new companies through a process that includes legal structuring, defining stakeholder participation, and signing the licensing agreement for the technology. These ventures also <strong>receive in-kind financial support<\/strong>\u2014up to $250,000 in specialized services from Tec and third parties\u2014to help them scale. This is facilitated through an internal financial tool called \u00c1baco, where the investment is converted into a convertible debt note that can become equity, or shares in the company, on behalf of the institution. This is managed through Tec Ventures, the unit responsible for overseeing Tec\u2019s equity participation in the startups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have two value capture mechanisms: the revenue generated from licensing and the equity stakes in the companies. We take a minority share in those ventures we invest in through Tec Ventures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer2-638x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"638\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer2-638x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer2-638x1024.png 638w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer2-187x300.png 187w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/technology-transfer2.png 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attracting Investment Funds and Building Ties with International Ecosystems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To support the scaling of science- and technology-based startups, the Technology Transfer Office also focuses on <strong>attracting investment capital to its ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Events like <a href=\"Spin-offs DemoDay &amp; Industry Challenges\">EBCTec: Spin-offs DemoDay &amp; <\/a><a href=\"\/en\/tag\/ebctec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Industry<\/a><a href=\"Spin-offs DemoDay &amp; Industry Challenges\"> Challenges<\/a> have served as platforms for Tec\u2019s science-driven companies to pitch their solutions to both domestic and international specialized investors. Cano notes that, to date, at least four of the institution\u2019s spin-offs have successfully secured funding from external sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key development for Tec\u2019s scientific entrepreneurship ecosystem has been <strong>the formalization of partnerships with venture capital funds<\/strong> such as Draper Associates, Dalus Capital, Sentinel Capital Partners, and GridX, among others. These collaborations have not only brought capital into the startups but also opened access to expert mentorship and global networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, at the most recent event organized by the DTT\u2014held in the <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/expedition-femsa-a-new-hub-for-interdisciplinary-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Expedition FEMSA<\/a> building\u2014<strong>Tec signed a memorandum of understanding with Draper House Am\u00e9ricas<\/strong>, an international venture capital ecosystem operating in the United States and Latin America. The agreement centers on the joint development of international readiness programs, where investors outline their technological needs and entrepreneurs work on developing solutions to meet those demands. \u201cWe\u2019re launching an initiative we call Draper Reverse Pitching, where we get to know the funds and they tell us what they\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DTT also leverages <strong>innovation districts, such as those in Monterrey and Tlalpan<\/strong>, as strategic physical spaces to implement its model and foster collaboration among researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, and industry players. These districts also serve as bridges connecting Tec\u2019s entrepreneurship ecosystem to other global innovation hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coordinating Scientific Entrepreneurship Within the Tec Ecosystem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of its technology transfer model, the Technology Transfer Office (DTT, for its name in Spanish) also fosters internal collaboration with other key players and initiatives at Tec de Monterrey, spanning strategic innovation, academic, entrepreneurship, and industry engagement areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One example is its work with the <strong>Tec R&amp;D<\/strong> team, an initiative focused on identifying industry needs and connecting them with the institution\u2019s research capabilities. These connections allow Tec\u2019s science-driven startups to present their solutions to industry partners and develop co-development or licensing projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DTT also collaborates with the <a href=\"\/es\/negocios-innovacion\/como-transformar-la-ciencia-en-emprendimiento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eugenio Garza Lag\u00fcera Institute of Entrepreneurship<\/a> during critical stages when scientific projects evolve into spin-offs, particularly in business validation and market projection. The partnership also extends to launching funding calls and organizing events that raise the profile of startups within Tec\u2019s ecosystem, such as Demo Days and forums like <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/the-next-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Next Decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the DTT collaborates with national schools to design challenge-based initiatives tailored to their specific areas of expertise. For example, with the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a>, it promotes the <a href=\"\/es\/salud\/investigacion-en-salud-health-pioneers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Pioneers<\/a> call, and with the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a>, it supports challenges related to digital technologies. Cano also highlights strong involvement with innovation communities such as those at <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/egade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EGADE Business School<\/a>, where networks are created to exchange knowledge and connect high-impact potential projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, the DTT aims to strengthen its ties with international venture capital funds and expand its investment network. Plans include organizing international events with the participation of other innovation ecosystems and creating physical spaces for investment funds within the innovation districts. The office also seeks to guide the broader technology transfer ecosystem to align with major technological and societal trends. \u201cWhat matters most is that industry and venture capital funds see us as <strong>a partner that understands where the big trends are headed<\/strong>,\u201d Cano says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
