{"id":170450,"date":"2025-07-11T09:38:36","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T15:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=170450"},"modified":"2025-08-05T10:31:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T16:31:23","slug":"advanced-therapies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/advanced-therapies\/","title":{"rendered":"Advanced Therapies: When Cells Learn to Fight Cancer on Their Own"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2010, Doug Olson, an American man based in California, became one of the first people to be cured of cancer with a novel immunotherapy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-04390-6.epdf?sharing_token=X032IMjlhSh2NQ2mAYof19RgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0OymgQIVsbYyE71amRWmZwZiLAuimJjFvltRCVjxmDiN1UN0PUi1s3Ln5kMyrEsnj36A3PMGldJBlqHljOmfo2REVkkPSym3ZDEliym5GzefureJdT7vA0Wrq48LqnnMJ66joKIAHXjNwn-cIWmPmQvzwbfJX2Z5D9IKPChHgkNMVUs1K3S52ClwnUgHxVFf7eFZWTlw4QJZVjJFAiP2PI7j689jzRFbz8ggelwpJMbMMNNLXko42XxPrRy3JoGpfK9ztm9GLrdVa74XVMWhJRRlGNAESs7lHt42is2z0SANA%3D%3D&amp;tracking_referrer=www.theguardian.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called CAR-T cells<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olson had battled for years with chronic lymphocytic lymphoma \u2014a type of blood cancer that affects B lymphocytes, the white blood cells that create antibodies\u2014 that didn&#8217;t respond to existing treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving said therapy, his cancer disappeared, and he remained in remission for over a decade. Today, he&#8217;s still alive and active. (Photo: ResearchTec.mx)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>His case marked the beginning of a new era in the battle against cancer. \u00a0\u201cHe was about to die, and they gave him this thing, and he was cured,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_339417?_gl=1*1jy0ct0*_gcl_au*NDIzMTgyNjAxLjE3NTIxMDUxNDM.*_ga*MTk1MTk5NzM1MC4xNzUyMTA1MTQz*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*czE3NTIyNjcxMjQkbzEwJGcxJHQxNzUyMjY4OTk1JGo0NSRsMCRoNzcxMzExOTY2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Carlos Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a<\/a>, a research professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> (EMCS) at Tec de Monterrey and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incmnsz.mx\/opencms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salvador Zubir\u00e1n National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition<\/a> (INCMNSZ). \u00a0\u201cIt became a therapy that many people began to believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In CAR-T cell therapy, T cells \u2014a type of white blood cell that detects and destroys abnormal or invading cells\u2014 are extracted from the sick patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the laboratory, these cells are modified to express a receptor, called CAR, which recognizes an antigen present on the cells to be attacked \u2014tumor cells in the case of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These modified cells then multiply and are reinfused into the patient. Once inside, they can recognize and destroy malignant cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in countries where it&#8217;s available, such as the United States and some in Europe, <strong>it can cost up to a million dollars<\/strong>. Fortunately, \u00b7there are those of us who are developing these therapies on a non-profit basis, intending to make them available to people,\u201d says Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfQu\u00e9 es la terapia celular y c\u00f3mo funciona para combatir al c\u00e1ncer?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LJuYfLCnccw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Therapies for the Future of Medicine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s13045-020-00910-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CAR-T cells<\/a> are part of <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>advanced therapies<\/strong>, a group of innovative medical treatments that&nbsp;<strong>utilize cells, genes, or tissues to repair, replace, regenerate, or improve bodily<\/strong><\/span><strong> functions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include gene therapies, which utilize genes to treat diseases; cell therapies, which employ modified or selected cells, such as CAR-T cells; and tissue engineering, where tissues, including skin, are created or modified to repair or replace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These have begun to transform the care of the most difficult-to-treat conditions, such as autoimmune, rare, or degenerative diseases, and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are relatively new therapies that have a lot of potential,\u201d says Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a. Given their promise, he and an interinstitutional group of scientists began creating a network focused on developing them in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 12 and 13, 2025, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a>, the EMCS, the INCMNSZ and the National Academy of Medicine, <a href=\"\/en\/health\/advanced-medical-therapy-regulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organized a symposium<\/a> entitled <em>Advanced Therapies: Innovation for Major Health Challenges<\/em>, bringing together researchers from these institutions, as well as from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN), the University of Navarra, the University of Salamanca and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of <strong>Spanish researchers<\/strong> was crucial, as they are leading the way in this type of treatment aimed at a broad population, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redterav.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spanish Network of Advanced Therapies<\/a> (TERAV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThey&#8217;re a group of dedicated individuals who&#8217;ve applied for funding together and helped each other with the regulatory processes,\u201d says Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a. \u00a0<strong>\u201cThey&#8217;re our role model.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of CAR-T Cells in Mexico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his laboratory, Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a, together with <a href=\"\/en\/health\/jose-alejandro-madrigal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alejandro Madrigal<\/a>, <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">a hematologist and researcher at EMCS and the\u00a0<a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Excellence<\/a>\u00a0at Tec de Monterrey, and numerous researchers and students, is developing new applications for CAR-T cells through<\/span> in vitro studies in cell lines and animal models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Alejandro Madrigal, el cient\u00edfico mexicano que reprograma c\u00e9lulas para combatir el c\u00e1ncer\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N0twa12If-8?start=15&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, <strong>they are focusing on finding ways to use CAR-T cells to treat myeloid leukemia<\/strong> \u2014a type of cancer related to the bone marrow\u2014 and brain cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo far, no one has been able to develop a CAR-T against these,\u201d Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, CAR-T cells have shown the greatest success in so-called \u201cliquid&#8221; cancers, i.e., those affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. Now, thanks to new advances, they are beginning to be used in solid tumors \u2014such as lung cancer\u2014 and autoimmune diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits of these are that they are highly effective in treating difficult diseases, they are manufactured from the patient&#8217;s own cells\u2014reducing the risk of immune rejection\u2014and a single infusion can be sufficient for a cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are also risks, such as toxicity, as well as overactivation or inactivation of the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the first patients given CAR-T cells was cured of cancer, but died of COVID-19,\u201d Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a warns. \u201cWe mustn&#8217;t forget that these are therapies for deadly diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a, along with researchers in Mexico and around the world, seeks to develop CAR-T cells that can exclusively attack cancer cells without destroying healthy tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the development of these and other advanced therapies in Mexico is still in its early stages, they hold promise for treating diseases we never thought possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA few years ago, the idea that the immune system can attack cancer was revived,\u201d says Crisp\u00edn-Acu\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
