{"id":170540,"date":"2025-07-16T12:26:02","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T18:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=170540"},"modified":"2025-09-25T14:17:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T20:17:11","slug":"technologies-to-clean-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/climate-and-sustainability\/technologies-to-clean-water\/","title":{"rendered":"A Mural Showcasing New Technologies Developed in Mexico to Clean Bodies of Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of the first call for proposals from the UNAM-Tec Research Consortium, a team of seven scholars from both institutions created a mural titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/seresdeaguasteam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Seres de agua STEAM<\/a>\u201d (\u201cWater Beings STEAM\u201d) to<strong> highlight innovative technologies designed to help clean up bodies of water.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently several techniques aimed at addressing this issue\u2014an increasingly urgent one given that 59.1% of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and coastal areas monitored in Mexico are contaminated, according to the National Water Quality Monitoring Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project brings some of these cutting-edge technologies to the public through an interactive mural, aiming to raise <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/natura-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">awareness<\/a> and foster engagement. The physical mural is installed at the Tec de Monterrey campus in Monterrey, near the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe started from the hypothesis that one reason science doesn\u2019t receive more investment in Mexico is simply that people don\u2019t know what\u2019s out there,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_84187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Torres<\/a>, an expert in architecture and industrial design at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey. \u201cWe have excellent scientists. So the idea was to create a mural where people could get to know them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"El potencial de los hongos para limpiar el agua\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKfkhnRUGxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Captions are available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acoustic levitation and nanotech fabrics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the technologies featured in the mural is acoustic levitation\u2014a method that uses vibrations to suspend a drop of water in midair, which is then analyzed with a laser. As the drop gradually evaporates, heavy metals remain trapped, making them easier to detect and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second innovation is what the team calls \u201chealing fabrics.\u201d These are nanotechnology-based fibers capable of removing heavy metals, reducing water hardness, or limiting chlorine levels in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s essentially a mechanical barrier,\u201d explains Antonio Ju\u00e1rez Reyes, a physicist at UNAM\u2019s Institute of Physical Sciences. \u201cContaminants and bacteria vary in size. Some bacteria are 10 micrometers wide, so if you create a mesh finer than that, the microbes can\u2019t get through. The more advanced idea is to coat the fibers in silver, which not only traps the pathogens\u2014it kills them too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bridging the gap between lab and market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ju\u00e1rez points out that the project as a whole is about building a bridge between <a href=\"\/en\/cities-and-prosperous-communities\/water-infrastructure-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific research<\/a> and market needs\u2014two worlds that often don\u2019t speak the same language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResearchers typically spend years developing a project, and then they try to push it into the market at all costs. But it should work the other way around: go to the market first, ask what\u2019s needed, then go back to the lab to develop a solution. That\u2019s the approach we\u2019re building. The market leads,\u201d says the physicist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team of seven researchers participated in the inaugural call of the <a href=\"https:\/\/consorciounamtec.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNAM-Tec Consortium for Research, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship<\/a>, which aims to foster collaboration between the two institutions to address challenges faced by private industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The participating team included: Antonio Ju\u00e1rez (UNAM), Moh\u00e1n Kumar Kesarla (UNAM), V\u00edctor Ulises Lev Contreras Loera (UNAM), Patricia Torres (Tec), Cristina Gehibie Reynaga Pe\u00f1a (Tec), and N\u00e9lida Astrid Escovedo Ru\u00edz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
