At the same time, they are working to cultivate computational thinking among students and collaborating to reduce the gender gap in science and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just a few of the projects featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/sites\/default\/files\/repositorio\/ife\/pdf\/IFE-Impact-Report-2-February-2024-2025-tec-de-monterrey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The IFE Impact Report<\/a>, which showcases Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2019s progress in creating <strong>solutions to global challenges in higher education<\/strong> and lifelong learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/tech\/education-can-not-ignore-artificial-intelligence-michael-fung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Fung<\/a>, Executive Director of the IFE, describes the report as the result of efforts by the institution\u2019s researchers, partners, and global collaborators to impact millions of people by innovating in education. \u201cThrough evidence-based approaches, we\u2019ve established relevant frameworks and practices to tackle the key challenges and opportunities facing education, including Artificial Intelligence, digital learning, microcredentials, and future skills forecasting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report presents over 50 initiatives in research, entrepreneurship, consulting, and outreach that the institute carried out between March 2024 and February 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/ife\/impact-reports?utm_source=TECSCIENCE&amp;utm_medium=banner+EN&amp;utm_campaign=ImpactreporttecscienceEN&amp;utm_id=IMPACT+REPORT+EN&amp;utm_term=impact+reportEN&amp;utm_content=impact+report+EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/07\/IFE5.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/07\/IFE5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/07\/IFE5.jpg 720w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/07\/IFE5-300x90.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shaping Skills: Identifying the Competencies for Tomorrow\u2019s Industries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shaping Skills<\/strong> is a project led by the <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/research-from-ife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Lab<\/a>, one of IFE\u2019s core research units. It\u2019s built on a platform that uses <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> technologies and algorithms\u2014such as natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs)\u2014to identify the future skills needed across various sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process begins by gathering large volumes of job postings and r\u00e9sum\u00e9s. After cleaning the data, the documents are converted into plain text so that algorithms can analyze them and detect key concepts like knowledge areas and skills. These are then compared to a taxonomy developed by the research team, based on the KSA model (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an <a href=\"https:\/\/shapingskills.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open-access tool<\/a>, the platform allows users to consult and visualize reports such as rankings of the most in-demand skills, trend detection, and sector-based analyses. It can also generate customized studies for universities, companies, and governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the leadership of researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_23643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Caratozzolo<\/a>, the team <strong>analyzed more than 230,000 job postings in Mexico and in the United States<\/strong>\u2014specifically in the San Francisco and Silicon Valley regions\u2014focusing on the automotive and information and communication technologies sectors. With additional financial support, the tool could expand to include insights into the healthcare and manufacturing sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing artificial intelligence and machine learning tools and techniques, we\u2019ve been able to <strong>identify the knowledge, skills, and competencies<\/strong> professionals need to develop for each economic sector,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt provides universities with foresight into which <strong>future skills<\/strong> to prepare for and gives industry a window into its future workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With support from another IFE unit, the <strong>Living Lab &amp; Data Hub<\/strong>\u2014led by <a href=\"https:\/\/ifelldh.tec.mx\/en\/semblanza\/hector-gibran-ceballos-cancino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H\u00e9ctor Ceballos<\/a>\u2014the team runs automated searches every two weeks across eight job databases, including LinkedIn, OCC, and Indeed, to generate diagnostics and projections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">E4C&amp;CT: Scaling Computational Thinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E4C&amp;CT<\/strong> is an <strong>educational model<\/strong> designed to foster the development of computational skills as well as complex thinking\u2014scientific, critical, innovative, and systemic\u2014that helps new generations grasp the implications and limitations of Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IFE researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_496650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rasikh Tariq<\/a> explains that computational thinking consists of four key subskills:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Abstraction<\/strong>, which allows individuals to focus only on essential information while ignoring irrelevant details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decomposition<\/strong>, which involves breaking down complex problems into smaller, more manageable parts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pattern recognition<\/strong>, to identify similarities and recurring structures that can aid in understanding and solving challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Algorithm design<\/strong>, to develop step-by-step solutions and define the rules needed to reach a desired outcome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tariq emphasizes that computational thinking isn\u2019t limited to engineering or the hard sciences\u2014it\u2019s also crucial in disciplines like the humanities. \u201cWe want to promote computational competencies among students and lifelong learners so they can put on those \u2018glasses\u2019 that help them better see and <strong>understand the world of artificial intelligence<\/strong>. The goal is to build the skills people need to interact critically and consciously with this technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E4C&amp;CT operates through a pedagogical framework and an open-access, free <a href=\"https:\/\/e4cct.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital platform<\/a>. It includes an initial assessment of the user\u2019s level of computational thinking and nine challenge-based courses aligned with the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The platform also offers accessibility features, such as accommodations for people with dyslexia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing each progressive course\u2014ranging from 10 to 16 hours in duration\u2014users receive a digital microcredential certifying their mastery of that particular challenge. The program also features an AI-powered virtual tutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, which won the Tecnos Nuevo Le\u00f3n 4.0 Award in 2024, <strong>has been implemented in more than 37 institutions across at least 12 countries<\/strong>, with nearly 3,000 registered participants\u2014more than 45% of whom are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MakerWomenSTEM: Advancing Women in Science and Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/makerwomenstem.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MakerWomenSTEM<\/a> is a project created in response to the underrepresentation of women in STEM\u2014science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_20811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edgar L\u00f3pez<\/a>, who leads the initiative, explains that one of its main goals is to train women through <strong>maker pedagogy<\/strong> so they can become mentors and pass on their knowledge to other women in their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This educational methodology is based on the principle of learning by doing. It promotes hands-on, <strong>knowledge-building experiences<\/strong> where participants create practical solutions to real-life challenges in their communities by applying theoretical concepts and working with various materials and technologies\u2014including sensors and 3D printers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you combine the educational theory we want to foster in you with something personal, community-based, or social, the learning impact becomes truly meaningful,\u201d says the IFE researcher. \u201cI teach you how to create, how to master digital tools, I help you build competencies\u2014and I turn you into a matchstick: once I\u2019ve sparked your interest, you go on to ignite the same flame in others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project received funding through the European Union\u2019s <strong>Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education<\/strong> program and brings together nine participating institutions, including universities and government agencies from Finland, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Ecuador. Its first phase aims to <strong>benefit 500 women across Latin America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u00f3pez notes that the team is currently working on the instructional design for a workshop, defining elements such as content, materials, duration, format, and evaluation criteria. They are also validating microcredentials for participants who complete the program and preparing pilot implementations set to launch in late 2025 to test the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope that in two years we\u2019ll be talking about at least 1,500 women who\u2019ve experienced our pedagogy,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019d like this to become <strong>an open educational model and a shared resource<\/strong>\u2014so effective that it reaches far beyond our current partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
