Your doctor not only knows the clinical facts but also listens carefully to your personal story, treating it as a crucial part of the diagnosis. They show empathy and respect because they were trained in a patient-centered learning model. Then, they pull up an <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a> (AI) tool that compares your medical history against thousands of records to detect patterns and improve your care in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That scene illustrates what happens when new approaches to teaching and learning transform health science education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way future physicians and health professionals are trained directly affects the quality of care we all receive,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_1366?_gl=1*1dq1olv*_gcl_au*MjY3NTg0Njc5LjE3NTYxMzY1MzEuNjM3NDIyODkuMTc1NjEzOTAyNS4xNzU2MTM5NzM0*_ga*MTAxNzcyMTU3OS4xNzU2MTM2NTMy*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*czE3NTYxMzg4NTAkbzIkZzEkdDE3NTYxNDAwMjUkajUyJGwwJGg0ODM2ODcyNDQ.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Jorge Valdez<\/strong><\/a>, the newly appointed director of the Health Science Education Research and Innovation Unit, presented this summer by the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education<\/a> (IFE) at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey. Valdez also serves as scientific editor at <strong><em>TecScience.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valdez is no stranger to the field. <strong>He has more than 30 years of experience in medical education and academic leadership<\/strong>. A Tec graduate himself, he served as dean of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> (EMCS) for over a decade and later became Director General of Quality in Education and Health at Mexico\u2019s Ministry of Health. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Mexican Academy of Surgery, and the Royal Society of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/conecta.tec.mx\/es\/noticias\/nacional\/salud\/academico-tec-recibe-premio-internacional-en-educacion-medica?_gl=1*2dp252*_gcl_au*MjY3NTg0Njc5LjE3NTYxMzY1MzEuNjM3NDIyODkuMTc1NjEzOTAyNS4xNzU2MTM5NzM0*_ga*MTAxNzcyMTU3OS4xNzU2MTM2NTMy*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*czE3NTYxMzg4NTAkbzIkZzEkdDE3NTYxNDAwMjUkajUyJGwwJGg0ODM2ODcyNDQ.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he received the Francisco Hern\u00e1ndez Award for Merit in Medical Education<\/a>, one of the most prestigious honors granted by the Pan American Federation of Medical Schools (FEPAFEM), recognizing leaders shaping the next generation of health professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through IFE\u2019s initiative, academics, researchers, and experts in education and health sciences are joining forces to generate knowledge that will strengthen teaching and learning in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to investigate and gain a deeper understanding of how to educate health professionals best\u2014physicians across all disciplines\u2014so they can provide better care for the public,\u201d Valdez explained. \u201cThat\u2019s our guiding principle: patients remain at the core. (Photo: Alejandro Salazar \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building a Hub for Educational Innovation in Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the new unit, academics, researchers, and health education experts will <strong>work together to strengthen medical teaching and practice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to investigate and better understand how to educate health professionals across all disciplines so that they can serve people more effectively. That\u2019s the ultimate goal: patients remain at the center,\u201d says Valdez. \u201cIf we want to make an impact in education, we need evidence, better data, and rigorous research\u2014because in the end, what matters is improving patient care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valdez now leads a team of more than a dozen researchers, including students, faculty, and academic collaborators, focused on health science education. Supported by TecSalud\u2014the ecosystem that integrates EMCS, Zambrano Hellion, and San Jos\u00e9 hospitals, and multiple clinics\u2014the unit aims to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in medical education:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Incorporating digital health tools and artificial intelligence into training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designing learning experiences in real and simulated environments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovating assessment and feedback mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generating evidence on the most effective practices and models across medical disciplines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe field of health science education is as broad as any other discipline,\u201d Valdez explains, \u201cbut what makes it unique is that we learn and teach in practice, in real clinical scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Lines and Priorities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new unit will focus on several key areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Patient-centered learning: cultivating professionals who are sensitive to patients\u2019 needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic societies: building communities where students and mentors learn collaboratively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curriculum design in clinical settings: trimester-based models emphasizing hospital and clinic practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment at the point of care: evaluating professional performance directly with patients, beyond written exams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test-enhanced education: using exams as learning tools to reinforce knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinical simulation and emerging technologies: leveraging AI, augmented reality, and simulators in safe environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cross-cutting themes\u2014such as digital health, artificial intelligence, and inclusion\u2014will run through all these lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the unit seeks to generate knowledge that strengthens medical education worldwide through scientific publications, patents, and educational resources for faculty and training programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bridge to Entrepreneurship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major goal is fostering entrepreneurship in medical education. One example is <a href=\"https:\/\/edumedexperts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edumed<\/a> Experts, a Tec spin-off created from a methodology that evaluates students directly during patient interactions. The new unit plans to collaborate with this company to support training programs and courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valdez also envisions projects like gamified apps to help students learn anatomy. Drawing on his own experience as a scientific entrepreneur\u2014he co-founded companies such as <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/lab-cornea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Synthetic Ocular Restoration<\/a>, which produces corneal tissue to restore vision\u2014he hopes to scale educational innovations into ventures with real-world impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global collaborations and local impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The unit is also looking outward, strengthening collaborations with institutions such as the Harvard Macy Institute, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and universities in Chile and Colombia that are part of La Tr\u00edada alliance. Additional partnerships include the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, the University of Concepci\u00f3n, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, and the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside Tec, the unit will collaborate with <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schools of Humanities and Education<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/egade-business-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Business<\/a>, and others, while also sharing methodologies with the IFE\u2019s Research Lab and Data Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Health Science Education Research and Innovation Unit was formally presented during the Transforming Health Science Education, Improving Lives symposium, a virtual event hosted by IFE that gathered international experts in medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Fung, IFE\u2019s executive director, reflected on the changing role of physicians:<br>\u201cWe need to think about our vision of the doctor of tomorrow. With AI supporting diagnostics, and in some cases even offering consultations, what skills will physicians need in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside Valdez, other speakers included Jos\u00e9 Escamilla, Paulo Blikstein, Silvia Olivares, Irma Era\u00f1a, C\u00e9sar Lucio, and Jes\u00fas Beltr\u00e1n, who showcased advances in patient-centered learning, clinical skills assessment, and immersive teaching methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the unit\u2019s initial focus is on Latin America, Valdez says the ambition is global:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to build a diverse community of innovative medical educators and leaders, integrating cutting-edge practices and technologies to transform healthcare systems and elevate medical training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
