{"id":170865,"date":"2025-09-09T12:43:01","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=170865"},"modified":"2025-09-25T12:50:28","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T18:50:28","slug":"sor-juana-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/education-and-humanism\/sor-juana-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Sor Juana: an AI that Brings Supreme Court Rulings Closer to Mexican Citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those of us who are not legislators, judges, legal professionals or experts, understanding Mexico&#8217;s legal processes can be complicated, as they often contain unfamiliar and complex terms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Many lawyers have the bad habit of writing extremely convoluted words or [tend to] include Latinisms, for example,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_274443\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Velda G\u00e1mez<\/a>, a professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-social-sciences-and-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Social Sciences and Government<\/a> at the Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to this, Minister Ana Margarita R\u00edos Farjat and her Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico (SCJN) team launched last year <strong>an <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/ponenciamamrfgpt.streamlit.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sor Juana<\/a> <\/strong>that aims to facilitate the understanding of its judicial processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With it, anyone can consult the public drafts of rulings currently being voted on by the SCJN. After choosing a ruling number, the person consulting can ask questions, and the chatbot answers them in plain language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, Sor Juana IA\u2014its name alludes to Sor Juana In\u00e9s de la Cruz, a Mexican symbol of justice and resilience\u2014brings justice closer to citizens and promotes transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Paola Ricaurte y la lucha por una IA justa y sin sesgos\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m-KvZYhdNag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">English Captions are available for &#8220;Paola Ricaurte and Her Quest for a More Equal and Unbiased IA&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Face of Technical Language, a Valuable Tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tool can even be useful for researchers and academics as a <strong>source of information on case law, to provide context for recent cases and identify trends<\/strong>, as well as to facilitate the reviewing of legal literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I use it to do research, understand current cases, and also when I teach, so my students don&#8217;t have to become law memorizers,&#8221; says G\u00e1mez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SCJN is the highest <a href=\"http:\/\/x\/en\/cities-and-prosperous-communities\/justice-observatory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">judicial authority in Mexico<\/a> and its job is to defend the Constitution and ensure that all laws and government acts respect it. In 2023, when it decriminalized abortion at the federal level, it reviewed state laws and found them unconstitutional, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, draft judgments by a Minister \u2014where they suggest how a case should be resolved\u2014tend to be long and technical documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sor Juana IA<strong> allows anyone to understand what the SCJN is discussing<\/strong>, why it is important, and how it could affect them, even if they are not a party to the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To create it, the Minister and her committee used tools such as Streamlit, Google, and Pinecone and wrote their own code. They fed it with the Minister&#8217;s draft rulings dating from 2022 to the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Step Forward in the Modernization of the Mexican Judicial System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform is currently in its <strong>testing phase<\/strong>, so it only has access to one sentence at a time and to R\u00edos Farjat projects, it may also generate unexpected or inaccurate results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, its existence is encouraging as it represents a step forward in the modernization of Mexico&#8217;s judicial system and it could also lighten the workload of public officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As lawyers, we shouldn&#8217;t romanticize this part of staying up reading until three or four in the morning; that&#8217;s what these types of tools are for,&#8221; says G\u00e1mez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the lawyer and psychologist dedicates herself\u2014in part\u2014to researching cyber victimology, digital vulnerabilities, cybersecurity, and cybercrime, so she has welcomed the tool with open arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, she warns that this, like any other AI tool, must be closely monitored to ensure that it does not reproduce biases or replace the work of ministers, judges, or experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The most important thing is to always know what you&#8217;re feeding them with,&#8221; says G\u00e1mez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
