It shows <strong>Lake Xochimilco<\/strong>, a small <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/how-to-save-the-axolotl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">axolotl<\/a>, and the maize grown in its <strong>chinampas<\/strong>. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The<\/span> <strong>United Nations Educational<\/strong>, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)\u00a0declared this site a\u00a0World Cultural Heritage Site in\u00a01987, thanks to its canal network, ancient agricultural tradition, and remarkable biodiversity. Yet over time, the ecosystem has suffered due to <strong>urban sprawl, climate change, and pollution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, today only <strong>188 kilometers of canals remain<\/strong>. Urban expansion has reduced the number of chinampas and <a href=\"\/es\/divulgacion-ciencia\/la-agricultura-el-motor-de-nuestra-economia\/\">agricultural areas<\/a> by <strong>75%<\/strong>. (Photo: Courtesy of Tec de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A witness to these environmental changes is <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_289299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jorge Membrillo<\/a>, a researcher at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education<\/a> (IFE) and a native of this area in the southern part of Mexico City. As a child, <strong>he would navigate through the chinampas with his grandmother, helping her grow all kinds of vegetables on those floating islands<\/strong>. Today, he\u2019s part of a team at Tec de Monterrey that designs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/361881277_Preserving_World_Cultural_Heritage_Social_Justice_and_Sustainability_Competencies_via_Socially-Oriented_Interdisciplinary_Education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interdisciplinary educational experiences<\/a> aimed at raising awareness about the cultural and scientific value of the axolotl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe real danger is not only the loss of the ecosystem but also the loss of our connection to it,\u201d says Membrillo, who also teaches at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC). \u201cThe axolotl is both a cultural and scientific treasure, but many people have forgotten about it\u2014until they see it on the 50-peso bill and start to wonder what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Axolotl: Cultural Symbol and Scientific Treasure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This species, endemic to Xochimilco, is globally recognized as a <strong>symbol of Mexican biodiversity and ancestral culture<\/strong>. According to Mexica mythology, the axolotl represents the incarnation of <strong>X\u00f3lotl<\/strong>, the brother of Quetzalc\u00f3atl, who was condemned to live in the lake&#8217;s dark waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists consider the axolotl a <strong>biological gem<\/strong> thanks to its ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature25458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regenerate entire limbs and even parts of its brain<\/a>. This is possible due to a phenomenon known as <strong>neoteny<\/strong>, which allows it to reach adulthood while retaining larval features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-59497-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;published a study linking <strong>levels of retinoic acid<\/strong> and how effectively axolotl cells regenerate after an amputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/axolotl-challenge1.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/axolotl-challenge1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-171044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/axolotl-challenge1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/09\/axolotl-challenge1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Students in the program visit axolotl conservation centers, where they learn about the species\u2019 unique characteristics. (Photo: Courtesy of Jorge Membrillo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Axolotl Challenge: \u201cNo One Protects What They Don\u2019t Know\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The deterioration of the lake has made wild axolotls a rarity. Today, conservation centers keep more than 90% of the surviving axolotls in captivity, making wild sightings rare. With this in mind, the IFE team launched the Axolotl Challenge, a research-driven educational project centered on one question:\u00a0How can students from diverse<strong> fields contribute to the preservation of the axolotl and its ecosystem?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal is preservation, and for students themselves to become spokespeople for this cause,\u201d says Membrillo. \u201c<strong>No one protects what they don\u2019t know<\/strong>. That\u2019s why we must start with the younger generations, teaching them about the axolotl&#8217;s scientific, cultural, and identity value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students from diverse academic fields take part in the program, strengthening their skills through a <strong>challenge-based learning approach<\/strong>. (Photo: Courtesy of Jorge Membrillo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Visits, Talks, and Real-World Solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Membrillo explains that the project\u2019s activities are designed to promote <strong>active, interdisciplinary learning<\/strong> through direct engagement with the environment. During field visits to <strong>Lake Xochimilco<\/strong>, students travel on traditional <em>trajineras<\/em>, explore the ancient <strong>chinampa farming system<\/strong>, and visit axolotl conservation centers such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mexicocity.cdmx.gob.mx\/venues\/michmani-chinampa-eco-park\/?lang=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michmani<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a key partner in the program\u2014where they learn about the species\u2019 developmental stages and habitat requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience is further enriched with talks by biologists, axolotl caretakers, and officials from the Ministry of the Environment. After analyzing the ecosystem\u2019s challenges, students design <strong>practical, actionable solutions<\/strong> and present them to the program\u2019s community partners. The <strong>Papalote Children\u2019s Museum<\/strong> collaborated with the program on one of its most notable projects, which incorporated several student proposals into a themed exhibit on <strong>Xochimilco and the axolotl<\/strong>. These included projects focused on improving energy efficiency, upgrading lighting systems, and optimizing water temperature control in breeding tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skills and Environmental Awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the process, students develop essential skills, including teamwork, critical thinking, effective communication, environmental ethics, and sustainability. For researcher Jorge Membrillo, the most valuable outcome is the awareness created: \u201cIf just one student goes home and tells their family about the value and identity of the axolotl, that\u2019s enough. (Photo: Courtesy of Jorge Membrillo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five Pillars for Axolotl and Xochimilco Conservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Membrillo, the team has defined five key pillars to ensure the project achieves lasting impact and can be replicated in other contexts: <strong>heritage value<\/strong>, which recognizes the historical and environmental richness of ecosystems; <strong>cultural identity<\/strong>, which strengthens people\u2019s connection to their roots; <strong>social justice<\/strong>, which involves and benefits local communities; <strong>scientific value<\/strong>, which drives research and knowledge creation; and <strong>entrepreneurship<\/strong>, which encourages sustainable solutions. \u201cA project like this could take place in the Sonoran Desert, in Teotihuac\u00e1n, or on Cerro de la Silla,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhat truly matters is grounding it in these five pillars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, the <strong>Axolotl Challenge<\/strong> has been held <strong>six times<\/strong>, with more than <strong>300 students<\/strong> participating and <strong>16 projects<\/strong> presented in the most recent edition during <strong>Tec Weeks<\/strong>, a part of the academic calendar when students engage in intensive, challenge-based learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Jorge Membrillo, this initiative goes beyond an educational project. It is a way to honor ancestral knowledge, protect biocultural heritage, and defend life through science. \u201cI hope to die still having seen Lake Xochimilco,\u201d he says, hopeful that new generations will be willing to care for what they now know, value, and feel as part of their identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
