Preparing the ground for them means<strong> looking beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/observatorio.tec.mx\/que-es-el-adultocentrismo-y-por-que-perjudica-la-educacion\/?_gl=1*vz9e0q*_gcl_au*MjE0Mzk4OTI4Ni4xNzU0MzUzNzg2LjE1MDc5ODk5MzkuMTc1OTM2NzE0MS4xNzU5MzY3MTQw*_ga*MTA5ODA0MjkyNC4xNzU0MzUzNzg2*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*czE3NTk3OTE3MTQkbzI3JGcxJHQxNzU5NzkxNzgzJGo1NSRsMCRoMTQyNzA1MTM2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adult-centric <\/a>perspectives<\/strong> that often reduce children to passive recipients and overlook their capacity for agency and autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPutting children at the center\u2014especially the most vulnerable\u2014requires assessing whether the policies and actions directed at them respect their contexts and realities,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/doctoradoestudioshumanisticosccm.tec.mx\/es\/semblanza\/martha-roxana-vicente-diaz?_gl=1*vz9e0q*_gcl_au*MjE0Mzk4OTI4Ni4xNzU0MzUzNzg2LjE1MDc5ODk5MzkuMTc1OTM2NzE0MS4xNzU5MzY3MTQw*_ga*MTA5ODA0MjkyNC4xNzU0MzUzNzg2*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*czE3NTk3OTE3MTQkbzI3JGcxJHQxNzU5NzkxNzgzJGo1NSRsMCRoMTQyNzA1MTM2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martha Roxana Vicente D\u00edaz<\/a>, a researcher at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Humanities and Education<\/a> at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey and an expert in education for sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea aligns with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/es\/informes\/estado-mundial-de-la-infancia-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 UNICEF report<\/a>, which raises the questions: How can we ensure that children fully enjoy their rights, and how can we build worlds where they can thrive and fulfill their potential?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answers aren\u2019t simple, but there are guiding principles that could shape future policies, including: non-discrimination, prioritizing children\u2019s best interests in public decisions, and guaranteeing their right to express their views, to survive, and to <a href=\"\/en\/cities-and-prosperous-communities\/designing-cities-for-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grow<\/a>. As we navigate social and environmental turmoil, <strong>the climate crisis continues to shape how we live and how the next generations will, too<\/strong>. In this scenario, children are especially <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0011392120975461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vulnerable<\/a>: their small, developing bodies are more susceptible to respiratory diseases, malnutrition, <a href=\"https:\/\/jogh.org\/2024\/jogh-14-04061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infections<\/a> tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/reports\/climate-changed-child#:~:text=Climate%20change%20is%20changing%20children,-UNICEF\/UN0639604\/Ayene&amp;text=The%20climate%20crisis%20is%20not,more%20vulnerable%20during%20extreme%20heatwaves.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extreme heat<\/a>, and other risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must also consider the emotional toll. Direct experiences (hurricanes, floods, wildfires) and the mere awareness of living through a climate emergency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/bjpsych-bulletin\/article\/children-and-youth-in-the-climate-crisis\/A7BA3D3D373BF41D7481698E34B116F5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase rates<\/a> of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and what experts call <strong>&#8220;eco-anxiety&#8221;<\/strong> among children. In <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11651023\/#s7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">numbers<\/a>, between 1990 and 2021, the incidence of anxiety disorders among those aged 10 to 24 grew by 52% worldwide, with Mexico showing the highest increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2050, the climate crisis \u2014more than an environmental or economic threat\u2014 will reshape how new generations live and learn. Education for sustainable development will become essential, integrating themes such as <strong>disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty, and responsible consumption<\/strong>. According to Vicente D\u00edaz, this also means urgently questioning educational models that perpetuate the very problems they seek to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNICEF&#8217;s report projects that access to education will continue to expand, but in an increasingly digital world, guaranteeing <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/education-for-vulnerable-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technological equity<\/a> and digital literacy will be key. This ensures that connectivity, rather than reproducing inequalities, remains a democratizing tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This challenge is not foreign to our region. In 2023, the dossier <em><a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000388806.locale=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe Futures of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean\u201d<\/a><\/em> reported progress in educational coverage aligned with the 2030 Agenda in Mexico, though many vulnerable populations remain excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions Are Incomplete and Ineffective Without Children\u2019s Voices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vicente D\u00edaz also warns about the bias of solutions designed under blind faith in credentials and academic expertise\u2014without genuine participation from those affected. If children are excluded from <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/safe-spaces-must-be-guaranteed-for-vulnerable-children-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">building solutions<\/a>\u2014if their voices, experiences, and interpretations of the world are ignored\u2014policies will remain incomplete or ineffective. That exclusion limits not only solutions but also our ability to imagine friendlier futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne mandate within education for sustainability,\u201d she says, \u201cis to build networks\u2014multi-actor strategies with genuine commitment and transparency about goals and scope.\u201d <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/research-in-public-policies-for-early-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Involving children<\/a>, she insists, is not a symbolic gesture but a <strong>fundamental right<\/strong> that must be exercised in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability, Vicente D\u00edaz adds, <strong>cannot be reduced to isolated technological terms<\/strong>. It\u2019s not a one-time solution. \u201cIt\u2019s a commitment to life\u2014a sense of belonging and interconnection with all living beings. To achieve this, we need to transform our educational systems and build ethical, collaborative governance,\u201d she concludes. This way, the proposed measures will be meaningful and resilient over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/stress-in-primary-child-care-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Protecting the children of 2050<\/a> goes far beyond climate mitigation. It requires reimagining how we solve problems, who we listen to, and which values guide our decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Placing children at the center, then, is a social imperative\u2014one that allows us to design policies ensuring that future generations can meaningfully contribute to the world they inherit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
