It can begin with an infected surgical wound or viruses, bacteria, or fungi in organs such as the lungs, intestines, urinary tract, or skin. For this reason, identifying it early can be the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dit.org.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tlalpan Innovation District<\/a> (DIT)<\/strong> of Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered genomic platform represents a major breakthrough in the detection of severe infections. Developed within the <strong>Genomic and Clinical Innovation Unit<\/strong>, it can accurately identify the pathogens responsible for an infection within hours\u2014accelerating diagnoses that previously took several days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Genomic Technology Applied to Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, Mexico City campus, this unit is part of the DIT ecosystem and equipped with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itrasig.org\/public\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Translational Institute of Genomic Singularity<\/a> (Itrasig) infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a strategic space that drives the development and application of cutting-edge technologies with a focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/the-progress-of-precision-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">precision medicine<\/a>,\u201d explains <strong>Benito Sotelo<\/strong>, director of the DIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the capacity to process up to <strong>14,000 genetic tests daily<\/strong>, the unit aims to create a national platform for genetic analysis. Its goal is to detect outbreaks of viruses, bacteria, and fungi at early stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its projects is a <strong>portable platform<\/strong> to measure the viral load of people living with HIV directly at the point of clinical care. (Photo: Courtesy)<br><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A District with a Focus on Health and Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the inauguration of the Genomic and Clinical Innovation Unit, <strong>Manola Zabalza<\/strong>, head of the <strong>Mexico City Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco)<\/strong>, emphasized that this project strengthens the city\u2019s commitment to building an ecosystem that links science, industry, government, and local talent to tackle future challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMexico City has everything it needs to be the epicenter of biomedical innovation: talent, infrastructure, industrial policy, and institutional will. This unit demonstrates how alliances can accelerate technology transfer in strategic sectors such as health,\u201d says Zabalza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sotelo adds that the DIT has a strong focus on <strong>education and health<\/strong>, thanks to the concentration of universities such as <strong>Universidad Aut\u00f3noma Metropolitana (UAM)<\/strong>, <strong>Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico (UNAM)<\/strong>, <strong>Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico Nacional (IPN)<\/strong>, and <strong>Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/strong>, along with the <strong>eight leading national health institutes in Latin America<\/strong>. This concentration turns the south of the city into a living laboratory of innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To strengthen this ecosystem, the DIT promotes the program <strong>\u201cAlliances that Transform,\u201d<\/strong> which connects national and international stakeholders\u2014including the <strong>Mexico City Government<\/strong>, <strong>Sedeco<\/strong>, <strong>Cofepris<\/strong>, <strong>IMPI<\/strong>, and pharmaceutical companies such as <strong>NeoPharma<\/strong>, <strong>Merck<\/strong>, and <strong>Sartorius<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Local Impact with a Global Vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its formal establishment in 2022, the DIT has moved from planning to action. Through its three strategic pillars\u2014<strong>Innovation and Entrepreneurship<\/strong>, <strong>Communities and Culture<\/strong>, and <strong>Urbanism and Sustainability<\/strong>\u2014it promotes projects that strengthen both research and quality of life in Tlalpan and its surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among these initiatives are <strong>Mercadito Sur<\/strong>, which connects producers from Tlalpan, Milpa Alta, and Xochimilco with new consumers, and <strong>Tejiendo Comunidades (Weaving Communities)<\/strong>, where Tec students, neighbors, and local organizations revitalize public spaces and foster collective learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another flagship project is the <strong>Camell\u00f3n Escuela<\/strong>, a 2.5-kilometer corridor between M\u00e9xico-Xochimilco and Acoxpa, now featuring bike lanes, green areas, and safe lighting\u2014returning public space to pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Power of a Connected Ecosystem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovation districts are territories where knowledge, talent, and collaboration between universities, governments, companies, and society drive sustainable development. They also foster a <strong>knowledge-based economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Tlalpan Innovation District<\/strong>, covering <strong>567 hectares<\/strong>, with more than <strong>35,000 residents<\/strong> and a <strong>floating population of 76,000 people per day<\/strong>, offers a new way to envision urban growth through science. Along with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/what-are-innovation-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monterrey Innovation District<\/a><\/strong>\u2014the first launched by Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2014it is part of a network of spaces that connect research, entrepreneurship, and social well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a member of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/giid.org\/advance\/global-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Institute on Innovation Districts<\/a> (GIID)<\/strong>, Tec also promotes this model in Monterrey, consolidating an <strong>international network of 45 districts across 15 countries<\/strong> dedicated to fostering innovation and technological development in urban environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Benito Sotelo<\/strong>, director of the DIT, the Tlalpan project was declared in 2019 to develop the city and attract investment and talent to transform the urban environment. Although the pandemic halted progress, the initiative was formally resumed in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn these three years, we have consolidated our three lines and paths of collaboration: Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Urbanism and Sustainability; and Communities and Culture. Each allows us to define thematic agendas and specific projects,\u201d explains Sotelo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the <strong>Tlalpan Innovation District<\/strong> encompasses a <strong>567-hectare
