With this in mind, a group of scientists developed <strong>a nano-and-biotechnology-based alternative that is less polluting and requires a minimal amount to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We call it our nanobiofertilizer,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQElXWh3qlXwCwAAAZpWj2cwUSJQHmWtos2XXMlMHvkxzytJW6GywSoF8otTcIh552BQXIoLXQn6SgkLVw6FLS7-mBGbM8Jhmp3F7eoyKhOBdAE23I74rjNhFkIuZ2MrXR5CGFI=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fmx.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fnavarro-lopez-diegoe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diego Navarro<\/a>, research professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC), <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-queretaro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quer\u00e9taro campus<\/a>, at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navarro, along with other researchers and students from Tec, has developed a supplement that combines nanoparticles of different elements with a microorganism \u2013such as beneficial bacteria or filamentous fungi\u2013 to help plants <strong>better absorb nutrients from the soil<\/strong> and be protected against diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"La nanotecnolog\u00eda como aliada de la agricultura sostenible\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2NGr1AxYal4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do Nanobiofertilizers Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Their nanobiofertilizers are an important step towards a more sustainable agricultural model that <strong>optimizes crop growth, avoids environmental damage<\/strong> and helps ensure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/cms\/uploads\/attachment\/file\/911180\/Dx_S290-Fertilizantes_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">food security in Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These organisms solubilize nutrients and pass on mineral salts, and the plant nourishes them with sugars in return, they form a symbiosis,&#8221; Navarro explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By mixing them with nanoparticles, which have biocompatibility, the researchers have created a sort of hybrid between a probiotic and a vaccine that helps <strong>plants grow healthy and resilient.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When nanoparticles interact with these bacteria, fungi, and the soil ecosystem, they can result in a thicker stem, better color, or more leaves,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQFbt3V9R1asxwAAAZpWkrrAl_CX-S1jGV04anKj0FscukwmfC41NzcXJwKLTz9iQJujrKMkNO47MgjwRKaMecqKtmrTwQxgPdw9o-P2m_A_kGgUWBOjxfEZPNJ98GGUmjg8q8c=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fmx.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fedgarlopezmena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edgar L\u00f3pez<\/a>, professor at the EIC, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-guadalajara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guadalajara campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/mx.linkedin.com\/in\/gildardo-sanchez-ante\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gildardo S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, they have incorporated <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12951-024-02957-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">machine learning models<\/a> to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304389425030134?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">projections<\/a> that allow them to understand <strong>what types of nanoparticles they should combine with what types of beneficial microorganisms<\/strong> to achieve the best result, depending on the plant they want to treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Each crop has its own peculiarities and nutritional needs,&#8221; Navarro points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Nanobiofertilizer That is Non-Toxic to Plants and Humans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanoparticles are extremely small, which gives them unique properties, such as increased reactivity and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4352\/15\/5\/470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antimicrobial properties<\/a>. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, <strong>including targeted drug delivery in medicine and agriculture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0927775722016260?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has tested nanoparticles<\/a> of carbon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3921\/14\/6\/707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">titanium dioxide<\/a>, iron oxide, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0169433221028087?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">erbium oxide<\/a>, in combination with various microorganisms in the laboratory and greenhouses, and have obtained improved crop yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So far we\u2019ve tested it on vegetables like papaya, blueberries, chili peppers, and tomatoes,&#8221; L\u00f3pez says. &#8220;We\u2019re starting experiments with tropical plants, like bananas,\u201d says Navarro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the great advantages of their nanobiofertilizer is that <strong>very small quantities \u2013micrograms\u2013 are needed to achieve superior results<\/strong> compared to those obtained by traditional fertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, they are biocompatible, so they do not harm the microorganisms in the soil or the insects that make up the ecosystems where these plants grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are looking to ensure that they don&#8217;t kill anything that doesn\u2019t need to be killed and that they don&#8217;t harm anything that helps the plants,\u201d L\u00f3pez says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the development of their project, the researchers have been committed to conducting cytotoxic tests to ensure that the nanoparticles are not dangerous to plants or humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of the Americas (UDLA) and the University of Guadalajara, they have tested them in cell cultures and various cell lines and, so far, have not found accumulation or any toxic effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards A Sustainable Agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, thanks to a collaboration with a consortium of farmers from Quer\u00e9taro, the researchers seek to test them <strong>in a real context, to see if they do work<\/strong> and if they could truly help small and medium-sized producers to have better yields and products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Understanding a farmer\u2019s mindset has been the most complicated and interesting part,&#8221; Navarro says. &#8220;It\u2019s essential to ensure that what you\u2019ve done actually reaches who it needs to reach.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important aspect to prevent the adoption of nanoparticles from becoming complicated is that the concept is no longer unknown to the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s due to skincare products, but it\u2019s not something that people are completely unaware of,&#8221; Navarro reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, they also seek to continue expanding their line of research to understand the genetic response of plants to their nanobiofertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Don\u2019t be afraid of nanotechnology,&#8221; L\u00f3pez urges.<strong> &#8220;You can get much better results than with kilos and kilos of chemical fertilizers.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Did you find this story interesting?
