A Mexican robotics and <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a> (AI) company has developed a system that allows the control of advanced prosthetic arms that can restore mobility to people who have lost one or both of these limbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s special about these prostheses is that they can interpret the electrical signals sent by the brain when it wants to make a certain movement and \u2014without the person having to do anything\u2014 it can execute it with great precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With traditional <a href=\"\/en\/industrial-transformation\/proform-dynamic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prosthetics<\/a>, people must learn how to use them in order to operate them, and the movements they make often feel unnatural, but in their case, it&#8217;s the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our system makes the machine learn how to function through a person\u2019s natural movement,\u201d says Alan Hern\u00e1ndez, a biotechnological engineer who studied at Tec de Monterrey, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-guadalajara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campus Guadalajara<\/a>, and is CEO and co-founder of BioGrip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using highly responsive sensors, their system is able to detect these <strong>electrical remnants<\/strong> of an intended movement. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Story Behind BioGrip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, after a long battle with Lyme disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQFsWFFNZ2YREgAAAZuQ8dsASz8g4XbpKDnte72wkAgXdpttvJfwX7PFGH6Ko8OJJqOaJE1cEhgCk-imMCR7YRPUTKgEAiY3HLSMhaExacFMNXKbxgvsozqati-ShQhC9iaNg5A=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fmx.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fglzisrael\">Israel Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a>, an electronics engineer specializing in advanced robotics and AI, decided to found BioGrip to restore mobility and hope to people with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years earlier, while trying to resolve his own diagnosis, he met Mr. Jos\u00e9 Luis, a man who had both arms amputated and who inspired him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of systems they have developed seeks to reduce the distance between <a href=\"\/en\/health\/older-adults-regain-mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neural intention<\/a> and mechanical response, one of the main challenges in the development of human-machine interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their goal is not only to replace a limb, but to restore the feeling of control and agency, that is, for the person to feel <strong>that the movement occurs as a natural extension<\/strong> of their body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you think about opening and closing your hand, you don\u2019t think &#8216;I\u2019m going to press twice here,&#8217;\u201cHern\u00e1ndez explains, \u201cWe focused on natural control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their approach aligns with the <strong>global trend in prosthetics<\/strong> and rehabilitation of designing technologies that adapt to the human body, rather than forcing the body to adapt to the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technological Innovation for Those Who Need It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond its technological innovation, BioGrip has found a way to make robotics and bionics \u2014a discipline that combines biology and technology to create systems and devices that mimic or improve the functions of living beings\u2014 accessible in real-world contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Latin America, these types of technologies are neither common nor easy to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve this, the company uses <strong>modular, scalable systems, centered on <\/strong>who will use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key component of their development is that they collaborate  with healthcare professionals, such as orthopedists, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation specialists, as well as users who actively participate in improving the devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe <strong>empathize<\/strong> with our users, I think that\u2019s our greatest strength,\u201d says Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/2.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/01\/2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To date, BioGrip has six ambassadors who are actively using the prostheses.
