In response, Mexican researchers are exploring the possibility of transplanting pancreatic islets into the anterior chamber of the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/pancreatic-islet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pancreatic islets<\/a> are clusters of cells within the pancreas that produce hormones, such as insulin. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/informacion-de-la-salud\/diabetes\/informacion-general\/insulina-medicamentos-tratamientos\/trasplante-islotes-pancreaticos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transplanting them<\/a> has become an alternative therapy that helps patients restore their body&#8217;s ability to produce the hormone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, these are extracted from a <strong>deceased donor<\/strong>, cultured and isolated, and then injected into the patient&#8217;s liver; however, they are usually accompanied by immunosuppressants to prevent rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, researchers around the world have sought alternatives, such as performing the transplant in the eye. &#8220;Between the iris and the cornea is the anterior chamber,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_211064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judith Bernal<\/a>, a postdoctoral specialist at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a>. &#8220;It has a privileged immune system where rejection is less likely.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eye, being semi-isolated, has special immunological characteristics that not only reduce the need for immunosuppressants but also allow the islets to proliferate and endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernal, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQEjixtcU4McCAAAAZukWbxYnK8ztvFricDszW6FQuPLlKeSb_qB2oFpbNHhdRAOjSPZKgBLbQHVr8rDuGesaUdWdxkiB7HEMvmGwKvKR1rexxpDjQQD2eY8q_oAy4nl5JYi-w8=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fmx.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fhugo-alvesfigueiredo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugo Alves,<\/a> researcher at <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/profesores\/emcs\/per-olof-berggren?srsltid=AfmBOooOs7pPsAZYGpkQjsiDK39tAoJMEl-O2tpcwIPn1wPgENVpsoWD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Per-Olof Berggren<\/a>, distinguished visiting professor of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> (EMCS) and of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/faculty-of-excellence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty of Excellence<\/a>, and other collaborators, seeks to bring this technology to Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernal recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eleconomista.com.mx\/arteseideas\/l-oreal-unesco-celebran-19-anos-impulsando-talento-cientifico-femenino-mexico-20251017-782265.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received the L&#8217;Or\u00e9al-UNESCO For Women in Science Award<\/a>, one of the most important recognitions for young female researchers in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfQu\u00e9 es el ojo seco y qu\u00e9 hacer si lo padeces?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kDpALFJQcdE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitle Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A New Platform for Studying Siseases and Advanced Treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bernal&#8217;s project not only seeks to offer a therapeutic alternative for type one <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diabetes<\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">\u2014and, in extreme cases, type two diabetes\u2014but also proposes a\u00a0<strong>new experimental platform<\/strong>\u00a0to study the islets&#8217; cell signaling, metabolism, and inflammatory responses<\/span>, which could drive advanced therapies in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can see, through the microscope, how the islet changes in response to different treatments and how the disease changes in parallel,&#8221; explains the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would allow real-time monitoring of how these animals respond to different drugs and of the factors that affect their survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to pancreatic islets, they are also looking to inject pancreatic and liver cancer spheroids. Spheroids are three-dimensional (3D) aggregates of tumor cells that mimic the structure of real tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe eye gives us a crystal-clear window to monitor how the tumor behaves,\u201d says Bernal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, they also want to use the platform to study organoids \u2014miniature three-dimensional structures similar to organs made in the laboratory\u2014 to study treatments, drugs, and interventions in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, the anterior chamber becomes a laboratory where advanced and personalized treatments for diabetes, cancer, and other diseases can be developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovative Technologies for Real Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1226086X17301004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anterior chamber transplants<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2021.652853\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rare globally<\/a> and are only performed at a few research centers. To date, they are not available in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, Bernal and his team are in the <strong>experimental part of the project<\/strong>, standardizing the extraction of the islets, the creation of spheroids, as well as the transplants in animal models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are analyzing how many islets are required for a positive reaction to occur, for example,\u201d Bernal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their ambitious plan, by the end of 2026, they would be performing the first transplants on human patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to develop new technologies that don\u2019t stay at the laboratory level, but have practical applications,\u201d says Bernal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
