It powers social media platforms and search engines. Yet, when it comes to education and AI, the conversation tends to focus solely on how students use the technology to learn, rather than <strong>how they might use it to develop critical thinking or understand how AI systems are actually built<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the perspective shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yasminkafai.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yasmin Kafai<\/a>, Professor of Learning Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, during her keynote address titled \u201c<em>CreateAI: Empowering Youth as Future Designers of AI<\/em>\u201d at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/ife-conference-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IFE Conference 2026<\/a>, hosted by the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education<\/a>, Education Group at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the attention is on children and students <strong>as AI users<\/strong>. (Photo: Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI Is Not a Black Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus on youth as users is evident in how <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/chat-gpt-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">educational efforts<\/a> are mostly geared toward teaching students to design prompts\u2014the instructions given to an AI\u2014and to use the technology as a task assistant. While Kafai acknowledged that these uses are important, she emphasized that they represent only a small fraction of the broader picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This limited approach stems from the belief that AI systems are \u201cbig and opaque,\u201d she argued\u2014in other words, <a href=\"\/en\/science-communication\/artificial-intelligence-and-emotions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black boxes<\/a> whose inner workings are unknowable. But she urged audiences not to forget that these tools don\u2019t \u201cfall from the sky\u201d or arise spontaneously; they are created by people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Computational Empowerment for Students and Teachers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this reality, the researcher spoke about the concept of \u201ccomputational empowerment,\u201d which she defined as <strong>the ability to understand digital technology<\/strong> and its impact on our lives and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is important is to computationally empower both teachers and students so they can engage <strong>creatively, critically, and with curiosity<\/strong> in the construction and deconstruction of technology,&#8221; she said. \u201cIt is not just the use. One way to do this is through algorithmic audits\u2014activities in which students analyze how algorithms work, test their behavior, and document the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kafai gave the example of a high school project where students examined AI-powered TikTok filters. They found that regardless of the original image, one particular filter transformed all faces into feminine figures with Eurocentric features\u2014successfully identifying <strong>algorithmic bias.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlgorithm auditing doesn\u2019t require any <strong>programming or coding experience<\/strong>. You also do not need access to the data or proprietary code, which was used to train the model,\u201d Kafai explained. \u201cThe only thing that it requires is systematic analysis. Students can become designers of algorithm audits that don\u2019t require any technical experience \u2014 they just need guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Constructing AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This perspective focuses on enabling young people to build AI systems themselves, so they can gain a deeper understanding by <strong>designing and training<\/strong> their own <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/tecgpt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">small-scale language models<\/a>. These tools are known as <strong>Baby GPTs<\/strong>\u2014smaller versions of models like ChatGPT that are trained on limited datasets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kafai shared that in workshop settings, high school students used the open-source nanoGPT framework to create their own generative AI models. Throughout the process, they reflected on the <strong>differences between human and machine thinking<\/strong>, learned foundational concepts about neural networks and data use, and engaged in discussions about the ethics of using public data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes, high school students <strong>can build their own AI systems<\/strong>\u2014this isn\u2019t something reserved only for OpenAI engineers,\u201d said Kafai. &#8220;Designing your own application is a very powerful and impactful way to learn and understand technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of her talk, the researcher called on the tech and education communities to develop simpler tools that allow students to <strong>explore how AI is built.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right guidance and room to experiment, young people can go on to build functional AI models. \u201cWe need many more tools for creating artificial intelligence,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
