At least, that is what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaleducationcouncil.com\/post\/ai-in-higher-education-latam-survey-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI in Higher Education LATAM Survey 2026<\/a> suggests, showing that 92% of students use it regularly and 67% at least weekly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was carried out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaleducationcouncil.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital Education Council<\/a> (DEC), an international and independent organization focused on the intersection of education, technology, and skills development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"IFE Conference 2026 del Tec de Monterrey\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NnHH-pham28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey includes more than 30,000 responses from more than twenty-nine higher education institutions in the region, including <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es?srsltid=AfmBOooOwg2kNFidz6I3_26irUhif-90luPyMOU_FdRpkUOMxPhgsNBF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unam.mx\/\">National Autonomous University of Mexico<\/a> (UNAM), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peruvian University of Applied Sciences<\/a> (UPC) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uc.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pontifical Catholic University of Chile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were presented during the panel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ifeconference.tec.mx\/agenda-completa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Usage and expectations of AI: Presenting the AI in Higher Education LATAM Survey<\/a><\/em>, which took place during the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/ife-conference-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IFE Conference 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel was moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQFYE82DXjnuJwAAAZxJvluQCCngRoXU_ty6a_lIkqCfsvhSF4DIHvYd5oAqmtbAzg5y8-FKOz6wBd4IMn7RtHUc4wdb8rIYKv1LOcBvllv31yPOAUXw29BJUrRx4DamuCD5pJo=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fmx.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fhgceballos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H\u00e9ctor Ceballos<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/living-lab-data-hub\/\">Living Lab and Data Hub<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey, and participants included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQGJgf0wUfs_mAAAAZxJv0nYkUqCzjOUFmWL5vbv67Ho_x31CZPx2CyAHcpYfwBLG_bjbOP4Im84g2Okp5aiKojzf5LK3MWh7P-MFnjU0GRwn1484b8T-v-zgGKzNs-8yhL0I4Q=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fsg.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Falessandrodilullo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alessandro Di Lullo<\/a>, executive director at DEC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQEN4kgrGcNRHQAAAZxJv5vgy05EVkbeXQr5gf8t5FczoDYMNmbO4XeYkGge0Vfe8bh5nPS_GsAFof5h7iOzjNNsat_SM7V_Li8qI1P0dM0fbXPyz-BTVm60pFXavYl4xxTWqC0=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fsg.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fdannybielik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danny Bielik<\/a>, president at DEC, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diplomadoems.unam.mx\/semblanza\/melchor-sanchez-mendiola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Melchor S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceide.unam.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coordination of Evaluation, Innovation and Educational Development<\/a> (CEIDE) at UNAM, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/authwall?trk=bf&amp;trkInfo=AQGGH2xqiicekQAAAZxJwJH4vfeaSO7MCeaIp-RMR-Q8j-0rIEV2OnzcFpQwzg0oidPJxnsNPhaxQ-eJFDyhsgitq9EfBg1sCS-orVmzPYRoBekcvhQ-nk6FpQAnDvZi78mMveA=&amp;original_referer=&amp;sessionRedirect=https%3A%2F%2Fpe.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fjorgebossio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jorge Bossio<\/a> from UPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the results presented by Di Lullo and Bielik, in the region students have adopted these technologies quickly, exceeding the global average of 2024, which showed a usage of 86%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, participants discussed that there is still a long way to go before AI can truly improve education at this level. &#8220;We are at the beginning of this revolution,&#8221; (Photo: Everth Ba\u00f1uelos \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI Among Higher Education Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the survey, the AI \u200b\u200btools most used by students are <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/chat-gpt-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChatGPT<\/a> in first place, Google Gemini in second place, and Meta AI in third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main use given to them is the search for information, which highlights the gap between use and understanding, since most of these language models are not search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many use it, 65% fear that it makes their learning more superficial and discourages critical thinking and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5229.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5229.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5229.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5229-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;There is a lack of formal policies for the use of AI in universities in Latin America,&#8221; said Bosio. (Photo: Everth Ba\u00f1uelos \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, more than half of the students surveyed are concerned about the privacy of their data when using these technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we should do is give students and faculty the guidelines, policies and governance infrastructure to give them the confidence to take the next steps,\u201d Bossio said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use of AI Among Higher Education Teachers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding teachers, the survey reports a 79% use of AI, compared to 61% globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of that 79%, 88% use it minimally or moderately, reflecting a more cautious approach than that of the students. This is also reflected in the fact that they primarily use it to create teaching materials and streamline administrative tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An unexpected finding was that it did not find a correlation between the age of the teachers and the resistance to using AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5232.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5232.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5232.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5232-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Latin America was overwhelmingly more positive than any other region around the world towards the use of AI in higher education,&#8221; Bielik said. (Photo: Everth Ba\u00f1uelos \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, 70% express great concern about biases and the accuracy of AI information, while 78% are unsure whether students will be able to critically evaluate the results produced by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Structural Gap for the Use of AI in Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The results suggest that, although there is great enthusiasm and willingness in the region to use AI in higher education, there is a structural gap that still does not allow for its optimal use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students seem to be adopting these technologies quickly, while institutions are falling behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnly 30% of universities in Latin America have published policies on how to use AI,\u201d Bossio noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also pointed out that the UPC has a community of more than seven hundred teachers who participate in weekly meetings to train themselves in the use of these technologies, as well as to share their successes, failures and advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At UNAM, there is a specific project to understand AI in education in which professors from different areas of knowledge participate, such as philosophers, geographers, architects, engineers, physicists and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have created a lot of materials useful for teachers,\u201d said S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5230.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5230.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5230.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/02\/IMG_5230-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;I think this report will be a goldmine of data and information to collectively reflect on the use of AI in education,&#8221; said S\u00e1nchez. (Photo: Everth Ba\u00f1uelos \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barriers to the Use of AI in Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The barriers that stop the use of AI in higher education being close to ideal are mainly cultural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One example is the constant fear that its use won&#8217;t be perfect and that failures will occur. &#8220;In every innovation it&#8217;s impossible that everything is successful,&#8221; Di Lullo said, advocating for a culture of trial and error that accepts failures while protecting students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second barrier is that teacher training has focused too much on technicalities and not enough on pedagogy. Teachers don&#8217;t need to become data scientists, but rather understand what AI means for education, how to guide their students in using it ethically and strategically, and how to integrate it into their own teaching practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some universities in Australia and Paris are looking to restrict the use of cell phones in schools, due to growing concerns about technology use among students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have to be cognizant that Big Tech companies are not the sisters of charity,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cEducation is in disadvantage with them\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For him, the increasing pressure to use AI immediately after updates or new programs are released can result in misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the answer isn&#8217;t prohibition either. &#8220;It&#8217;s better to teach them how to use it; that&#8217;s the next step that we must follow at universities,&#8221; Ceballos said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey makes it clear that several steps still need to be taken to ensure that AI contributes to education and does not harm students and teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Mexico, we always complain that we do not have local evidence,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cWell, here it is; let&#8217;s read it, use it, internalize it, and take action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
