Now, she seeks to train the next generation of female scientists and engineers, using the scientific method as her guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her career as a <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=Pz30dwUAAAAJ&amp;hl=es&amp;oi=ao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">researcher specializing in nanomedicine<\/a>, the researcher has received the <strong><a href=\"\/en?s=mujer+tec+award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mujer Tec Award<\/a> <\/strong>2026 in the <strong>science category<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s confirmation that all of this has been worth it,\u201d says Pinilla, a Student Mentor and Leader of the Research and Innovation Ecosystem (EIIME) within the Department of Mentorship Model Management at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinilla is originally from Colombia and arrived in Mexico in 2018 to pursue a doctorate in materials science at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimav.edu.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Research in Advanced Materials <\/a>(Cimav) in Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, she developed a project to create nanosystems for gene therapy against breast cancer. &#8220;These systems are selective and allow for therapies that are much more targeted than chemotherapy or radiotherapy,&#8221; the expert explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology to develop treatments, diagnostics, therapies, and preventative tools that improve people&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scale at which it operates allows intervention in biological processes at the molecular and cellular level. One of its most promising applications is the targeted delivery of drugs and therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was interested in nanomedicine because other therapies are extremely invasive,\u201d says Pinilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ana Mar\u00eda Pinilla, Premio Mujer Tec 2026 categor\u00eda Ciencias\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hZUiBr9DrBw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nanomedicine to Treat Breast and Cervical Cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Pinilla&#8217;s main research interests was designing materials that could interact safely with biological systems, such as the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of their studies, Pinilla and her team developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4360\/15\/17\/3533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a sustainable method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles using mesquite gum<\/a> to regulate and stabilize the reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result was particles with a size between three and 30 nanometers with low cellular toxicity, a key characteristic for them to be applied to medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metallic nanoparticles like these have sparked great interest in biomedical research due to their potential; however, many production methods generate particles that can be harmful to cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02-1024x683.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/IMG_0846-Propuesta-02.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cWe usually associate science with lab work, but it really goes beyond that,\u201d says Ana Mar\u00eda Pinilla. (Photo: Everth Ba\u00f1uelos \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of natural biopolymers, such as mesquite gum, offers a safer and more sustainable alternative for stabilizing these nanomaterials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring my master\u2019s degree, I worked on how to synthesize nanoparticles for cervical cancer therapies,\u201d Pinilla recalls. \u201cI wanted to become an expert in that field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researcher earned her bachelor&#8217;s and a master&#8217;s degree in chemistry from the Industrial University of Santander, Colombia. Once in Mexico, she continued her line of research, now focused on breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, her life took an unexpected turn that led her to dedicate herself to mentoring, where she combines her scientific knowledge with her passion for guiding other women to become scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guide New Female Scientists and Engineers Without Imposter Syndrome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the laboratory, Pinilla has focused on training women in STEM fields. As a mentor, her work involves guiding students through the process of developing scientific thinking, from formulating questions or hypotheses to interpreting experimental results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI consider my transition quite disruptive,\u201d says the researcher. \u201cScientists tend to focus a lot on solving problems, but in my case, I currently focus more on a humanistic approach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her, the scientific path is wonderful, so she feels that her mission is to teach more women how interesting it is to be a scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy path, but there\u2019s something for everyone, whether you\u2019re drawn to nature, the human body, materials, aviation\u2026 there are many approaches,\u201d Pinilla invites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Research and Innovation Ecosystem, mentoring is structured around four axes: reflection, research, dissemination, and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their vision, everything begins with reflection, with those attending a mentoring session deciphering their purpose in life and the problem they want to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her aim is to inspire future generations not to be afraid to pursue research. In this sense, her work contributes to two dimensions of science: the generation of knowledge and the formation of a scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs women, we often experience imposter syndrome,\u201d says Pinilla. \u201cWhen we\u2019ve established ourselves for a while, we start thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t know if this is luck or if I deserve it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through her mentoring and research in educational innovation, she hopes that future generations will no longer doubt their abilities and will know that they can achieve anything they want, especially if that means becoming a scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
