{"id":172751,"date":"2026-03-10T12:10:04","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T18:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=172751"},"modified":"2026-03-30T20:20:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T02:20:35","slug":"premio-mujer-tec-2026-women-scientists-environmental-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/climate-and-sustainability\/premio-mujer-tec-2026-women-scientists-environmental-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Transforming Science: Modeling Natural Hazards and Protecting Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/centrodelagua.tec.mx\/es\/semblanza\/dra-rosanna-bonasia\">Rosanna Bonasia <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_484898\">Karina Coronado Apodaca<\/a>, winners of the Premio Mujer Tec 2026 in the Environment category, agree that science changes when more women join the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.<\/strong> Spaces that, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000391384\">UN report (2023)<\/a> on the subject, remain predominantly male.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they believe the gender gap is narrowing, both scientists feel that more women still need to occupy decision-making positions. \u201cIncluding more women is not just a matter of justice; it is also a way to enrich science and bring it closer to society\u2019s real problems,&#8221; says Bonasia. In that spirit, they highlight the case of Blanca Brambila P\u00e9rez, the third honoree in the same award category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Blanca Brambila: A Pioneer of the Circular Economy in Mexico<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Tec de Monterrey, Blanca Brambila became director of sustainability at Heineken Mexico and is considered one of the pioneers of the circular economy in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/1-2.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-172891\" style=\"width:270px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/1-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/1-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/03\/1-2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Blanca Brambilia, pioneer of the circular economy. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In that role, she promoted initiatives such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informabtl.com\/la-economia-circular-regresa-a-heineken-reutilizara-vasos-para-fabricar-mobiliario\/\">collecting bottles<\/a> and cans at concerts for reuse, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milenio.com\/negocios\/vendedores-de-alcohol-deben-sumarse-a-no-te-hagas-guey\">programs to prevent<\/a> harmful alcohol consumption. She also participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntrguadalajara.com\/post.php?id_nota=138262\">grant ceremonies<\/a> for research projects in areas like microplastic filtration in water and supported initiatives like BioUrban 2.0, an air-purifying device installed at the Heineken Monterrey plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blanca Brambila passed away in March 2024. She doesn\u2019t like pencils or pens, but you put a lab coat and a micropipette in front of her and she is thrilled,&#8221; says the associate director in the Department of Sustainable and Civil Technologies at Tec de Monterrey\u2019s Guadalajara campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>There, she leads the <strong>Siprecia project<\/strong>, in collaboration with researchers such as Osiris D\u00edaz Torres from the Universidad de las Am\u00e9ricas Puebla and Mariel Alfaro, head of the Advanced Materials Manufacturing Processes area at Tec. But that <em>lama<\/em> is actually made up of living organisms,&#8221; explains the biotechnologist. Some of these organisms are <strong>cyanobacteria<\/strong>, which under certain conditions can produce toxins harmful to human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are most commonly found in polluted bodies of water, where excess nutrients favor their growth. However, measuring cyanotoxins requires advanced techniques that are not always available. In response, Coronado and her team developed an interface that uses variables such as weather conditions and water chemistry to generate an index estimating whether water from a river or lake may pose a health risk to nearby communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the scientist, projects like this are only possible through collaboration across disciplines. That exchange of knowledge, she explains, is one of the defining characteristics of the initiatives she leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Siprecia, she adds, &#8220;In this particular project, my intention, from my feminist side, was to show that women are present in every field and that we are capable of leading multidisciplinary projects.&#8221; For the researcher, the future of science is, by necessity, collaborative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same interdisciplinary approach is also at the heart of the work of other researchers recognized by the Premio Mujer Tec 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/03\/TecS_Rosanna_01_Editable.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2026\/03\/TecS_Rosanna_01_Editable.jpg\" alt=\"Ilustraci\u00f3n de la investigadora Rosanna Bonasia en referencia a su trabajo cient\u00edfico sobre inundaciones, agua y modelaci\u00f3n de fen\u00f3menos naturales.\" class=\"wp-image-183300\"\/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Researcher Rosanna Bonasia applies computational fluid mechanics to study floods and natural phenomena associated with water. (Illustration: Eduardo Ram\u00f3n)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rosanna Bonasia: Scientific Modeling for Natural Hazard Management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One example is the Water360 project, led by Rosanna Bonasia, a research professor in the Department of Sustainable and Civil Technologies at the School of Engineering and Sciences at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2019s Estado de M\u00e9xico campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this initiative, she coordinates a team of around twenty scientists who study water from multiple perspectives. Her research focuses on understanding how water behaves during floods and tsunamis, with the goal of anticipating and reducing the risks associated with these phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water, however, was not the first fluid she studied. As a volcanologist, Bonasia completed her doctorate in computational fluid mechanics, modeling the behavior of volcanic ash in the atmosphere during an eruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with other specialists, she contributed to developing tools to predict ash dispersal from Popocat\u00e9petl, one of Mexico\u2019s most active and significant volcanoes. Today she applies computational fluid mechanics models to predict variables such as water depth and velocity during flood events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within Tec, she highlights the presence of women in decision-making positions, an advancement she believes is still lacking in the broader scientific community.
