To address these kinds of challenges, the <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/ai-for-manufacturing-and-supply-chain-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI for Manufacturing and Supply Chain Institute<\/a> (AIMS) at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey is preparing to launch a laboratory in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perkinelmer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PerkinElmer<\/a>, a global company specializing in analytical technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the <strong>SMART-PerkinElmer <strong>(Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Research Technologies Laboratory)<\/strong><\/strong>, which will focus on <strong>studying the properties and behavior of <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/advanced-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">materials<\/a><\/strong> for research applications and industrial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis laboratory supports the experimental side of all AIMS projects. It is a space dedicated to applied research and collaboration with industry,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_114562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cecilia Trevi\u00f1o<\/a>, a researcher at the institute who is leading the development of the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to connect scientific and technological capabilities with the real-world needs of manufacturing and materials, and as part of the institute\u2019s restructuring, <strong>supply chain considerations<\/strong> will also be incorporated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaboration with PerkinElmer includes a sponsorship of one million dollars in highly specialized scientific equipment aimed at solving challenges ranging from basic science to industrial implementation, explains the professor from the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC). (Photo: Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Three Research Areas of the Laboratory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The laboratory, which will be located at the Bioengineering Center on the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-queretaro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quer\u00e9taro campus<\/a> and integrated into the AIMS research platform, will be divided into three areas with distinct capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Characterization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This area focuses on the thermal and structural characterization of different types of materials, including metals, ceramics, composites, and even food products. Through these processes, researchers can determine, for example, the types of molecules that make up a material and how they are structured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These capabilities make it possible to understand how a material behaves and how different conditions affect its degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Organic Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second area is centered on processes and technologies for the organic analysis of materials, including techniques such as liquid chromatography and gas chromatography to <strong>identify the chemical composition of different samples<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying the components and compounds present in materials and food products can be valuable for research related to quality control and certification compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inorganic Analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this area, Trevi\u00f1o highlights that the laboratory will feature two cutting-edge technologies that enable more precise identification, quantification, and purity measurement of inorganic components, such as metals and minerals. These technologies are inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and atomic absorption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot all laboratories have access to these technologies, and we are going to have fully equipped systems, complete with libraries and accessories to perform all kinds of analyses,\u201d she explains. \u201cThrough the agreement and sponsorship with PerkinElmer, out of the 10 instruments, we will have the best and most complete versions of each because they are the manufacturers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These technologies can be used for <strong>trace metal analysis in water<\/strong>, verifying whether food products meet FDA certification requirements, or understanding the purity and behavior of materials in industrial processes, as well as in recycling and manufacturing research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Addressing Industry Needs and Attracting Specialized Talent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the researcher, this infrastructure, which is being added to the AIMS research platform alongside other facilities such as the Smart Manufacturing and Materials Lab, will also strengthen research efforts and attract talented students and faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having the facility available means <strong>no longer relying on external services and laboratories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the research projects moving into this new space is the work led by Trevi\u00f1o on the degradation of <a href=\"\/en\/industrial-transformation\/butadiene-rubber-recycled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rubber<\/a> and elastomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The laboratory aims to address industry needs, first within the region and later across the country, serving sectors such as <strong>agribusiness, recycling, automotive, aerospace, and food industries, as well as the chemical industry<\/strong> and areas related to wastewater treatment, where processes requiring this type of analysis are common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-1024x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-173390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/05\/quotes-cecilia-trevino.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quer\u00e9taro, a Hub for Innovation and Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility will also become part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distritoqro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">distritoQRO<\/a> ecosystem, an <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/what-are-innovation-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">innovation district<\/a> promoted through a partnership among Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Autonomous University of Quer\u00e9taro (UAQ), and the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cQuer\u00e9taro was strategically chosen because it <strong>is the geographic center of the country<\/strong>, which allows us to serve all regions. Quer\u00e9taro is a hub for innovation and research, and that is another factor that sets us apart,\u201d says Trevi\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to all the infrastructure, we have Tec\u2019s human capital, including AIMS and the School of Engineering and Sciences. We have the scientific capabilities to carry out complete projects, not just provide services. With this laboratory, we can deliver comprehensive solutions to specific challenges, ranging from experimental work to industrial implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researcher hopes that, in the future, the SMART-PerkinElmer laboratory will become a benchmark center for solving industrial challenges, one that companies and decision-makers can turn to when facing complex issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited that, as Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, we have achieved this partnership with such an important company. It is something unique because there will not be another laboratory like this in the region.
