{"id":173852,"date":"2026-07-03T14:15:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T20:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=173852"},"modified":"2026-07-06T14:56:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T20:56:00","slug":"robotic-teleoperation-motor-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/industrial-transformation\/robotic-teleoperation-motor-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"How Robotic Teleoperation Could Expand Employment Opportunities for People with Motor Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by Tokyo\u2019s DAWN Avatar Robot Cafe, where people with severe motor disabilities remotely operate robots to serve customers, <strong>researchers at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey are developing a robotic teleoperation platform<\/strong> that can be applied to the <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/manufacturing-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manufacturing industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, <em>Formal and Robust Collaborative Models for the Inclusion of People with Motor Disabilities in Manufacturing<\/em>, also incorporates virtual reality, digital twins, depth cameras, and computer vision, explains <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_290733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carlos Renato V\u00e1zquez<\/a>, a research professor in the Department of Mechatronics at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC) at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-guadalajara\/\" id=\"516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guadalajara campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone says that artificial intelligence and robotics are going to take away jobs. Here, it\u2019s the opposite: technology helps people find meaningful employment and enjoy a better quality of life,\u201d says V\u00e1zquez, who leads the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"La ciencia detr\u00e1s de un dispositivo que permite conversar con personas sordociegas\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AJ0X5g0KtO0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">English captions are available for \u201cThe Science Behind the Machine that Makes Possible To Have Conversations with Deaf-blind people\u201d <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paid Employment for People with Severe Motor Disabilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the researcher, beyond its economic benefits, the platform is designed to address the social isolation and lack of employment opportunities faced by people with severe motor disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor many people with motor disabilities, finding paid employment is extremely difficult. But it is also incredibly valuable for them to be able to interact with other people and no longer live in isolation,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project also addresses a need within the manufacturing industry, where some specialized positions are difficult to fill. <strong>Teleoperation would make it possible for trained people with motor disabilities to perform those tasks remotely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solutions like these could become even more important in the <a href=\"\/es\/divulgacion-ciencia\/la-vida-y-el-trabajo-al-2040-entre-los-roles-tradicionales-y-la-economia-informal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">years ahead<\/a> as the global population continues to age. (Photo: Courtesy of Carlos Renato V\u00e1zquez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Controlling Real Objects Through Virtual Environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project was designed around two operating models. The first allows a person to control an industrial robot located inside a factory <strong>while working remotely from home<\/strong>. The second envisions the worker traveling to the plant, where robotic assistance would enable them to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to carry out on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the pilot tests, participants wearing <strong>virtual reality headsets<\/strong> manipulated a digital replica of an industrial robot\u2019s gripper to move a cube detected by depth cameras. When the operator moved the virtual model and pressed a button, the physical robot replicated the motion to grasp the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea is that, by controlling <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/industrial-metaverses-for-a-better-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">virtual objects<\/a>, the person can teleoperate the robot to manipulate real-world objects,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">V\u00e1zquez adds that <strong>the project focuses on industrial operations that still cannot be automated<\/strong>, such as connecting or assembling parts with hoses, cables, or other flexible components. These tasks remain challenging even for advanced autonomous robots because they require anticipating how materials will deform and continuously adjusting movements in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere in Guadalajara, we work with companies that assemble products on a large scale. For these kinds of assemblies involving flexible components, a robot alone can\u2019t do the job. But if a person is guiding the robot on how to grasp the part and how to insert it, then it can accomplish the task.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key aspect of the project is its emphasis on using equipment and technologies that are already commercially available, such as existing industrial robots, VR headsets, and off-the-shelf cameras. By relying on widely available hardware, the team hopes to <strong>make it easier for manufacturers to adopt the model<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, using commercially available equipment ensures that the technology is not confined to expensive laboratory prototypes or systems that are difficult to implement in real-world settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to strike a balance. The focus is on people with disabilities\u2014the technology has to be useful for them. But the robot and the VR headset won\u2019t be paid for by the individual; they\u2019ll be paid for by the company,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd for a company to make that investment, it has to see a return. In other words, we have to make sure this technology has a real chance of being purchased, adopted, and put to productive use. If the numbers don\u2019t add up, it simply won\u2019t go anywhere.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-1024x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-173863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/07\/quotes-carlos-vazquez.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Just Automating Processes, but Expanding Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, funded through the Basic and Frontier Science program of Mexico\u2019s Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (SECIHTI), aims to develop methodologies and technologies that can be replicated across the country\u2019s manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative is currently in the technology integration phase, where the team has already made significant progress. \u201cThe first and most visible milestone is bringing all the technologies together and getting the system to work as a whole. We\u2019re about 50 percent of the way there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the next stages, the researchers will validate the platform with people who have varying degrees of motor disability, evaluating how they interact with the system and making any necessary adjustments. This process will involve designing research protocols and obtaining approval from an ethics committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researcher estimates that this phase could take as long as a year and a half because of the complexity of conducting trials with human participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe technical specifications, user guides, and methodologies will all be made publicly available. If a company wants to build its own workstations, we\u2019ll explain the entire process from start to finish: purchase these technologies, install the software we developed, carry out these tests and measurements with both the users and the robot, and you\u2019ll be able to implement the platform on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the project continues to scale, the team hopes <strong>the methodologies they develop will be widely adopted to ensure that robotics not only automates industrial processes but also expands employment opportunities<\/strong> for people with motor disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
