However, <strong>that narrative is misleading<\/strong>. Major changes rarely depend on a single discovery; they occur when an innovation changes how knowledge is produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is probably what is happening with Eli Lilly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a strictly economic perspective, the company&#8217;s success appears to be explained by the extraordinary performance of <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/salud\/medicamentos-para-la-obesidad\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tirzepatide<\/a><\/strong> and a new generation of GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally <strong>developed to treat type 2 diabetes<\/strong> and later becoming some of the most successful <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/salud\/tratamientos-contra-la-obesidad\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-obesity medications<\/a><\/strong> in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand for <strong>these drugs<\/strong> has been so intense that it has forced a massive expansion of manufacturing capacity and driven unprecedented investments in research, infrastructure, and artificial intelligence. However, reducing the phenomenon to a pharmaceutical success would overlook a deeper transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biology Enters a New Era<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For much of the 20th century, drug development was essentially <strong>empirical<\/strong>. Thousands of compounds were synthesized and experimentally tested in the hope of finding one with <strong>therapeutic activity<\/strong>. Later, molecular biology made it possible to identify specific targets and design molecules more rationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, a <strong>third paradigm<\/strong> is emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simultaneous availability of genomic sequences, three-dimensional protein structures, clinical databases containing millions of patients, medical images, cellular models, and artificial intelligence tools is changing the logic of biomedical discovery. <strong>Instead of searching for molecules one by one<\/strong>, it is becoming possible to explore virtually unmanageable chemical spaces using algorithms that can generate and evaluate millions of candidates before synthesizing even one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not simply about automating existing processes. It is about <strong>changing<\/strong> the order in which <strong>scientists generate hypotheses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This transition is reminiscent, in some respects, of the shift from descriptive natural history to experimental biology in the 19th century. The difference is that today&#8217;s capacity for observation comes from <strong>enormous volumes of data<\/strong> and computational models trained to identify patterns that are invisible to human analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Las claves para enfrentar las enfermedades metab\u00f3licas del futuro\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZDEN2eldCCY?start=52&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evolution: The Central Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it would be naive to assume that artificial intelligence will solve the challenges of medicine on its own. Living organisms were not designed; they evolved. That distinction is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evolution produces robust systems<\/strong>, but extraordinarily complex ones. A protein simultaneously participates in multiple regulatory networks; the same receptor can modify metabolic, immune, and neurological processes depending on the tissue in which it is expressed. As a result, any pharmacological intervention produces effects that extend beyond its initial target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/salud\/tratamientos-contra-la-obesidad\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GLP-1 agonists<\/a><\/strong> illustrate this situation perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally <strong>developed to control blood glucose<\/strong>, they later <strong>proved to induce weight loss<\/strong>; subsequently, <strong>cardiovascular<\/strong>, kidney, and neurological benefits emerged; at the same time, adverse effects requiring ongoing monitoring began to be identified, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults at risk of frailty, muscle loss, or malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biological knowledge continues to expand even after drugs receive regulatory approval. In biology, molecules rarely have a single function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The True Asset Is Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most important change is not pharmacological but epistemological. Large pharmaceutical companies are no longer competing solely through individual patents, but increasingly through platforms for generating knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A platform integrates <strong>clinical data<\/strong>, <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong>, <strong>experimental automation<\/strong>, <strong>computational chemistry<\/strong>, <strong>advanced manufacturing<\/strong>, and <strong>global clinical trials<\/strong>. Each new drug is not only a commercial product; it is also a source of information that improves the models used to discover the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this perspective, knowledge acquires cumulative properties similar to those observed in biological evolution: each innovation changes the landscape in which subsequent innovations occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is therefore unsurprising that Lilly is simultaneously investing in artificial intelligence, partnerships with companies specializing in computational drug discovery, and the expansion of its manufacturing infrastructure. These are not independent projects, but components of the same technological system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are we witnessing a transformation comparable to that brought about by biotechnology in the 1980s?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear historical precedent exists: the introduction of recombinant DNA profoundly transformed the pharmaceutical industry. Before that revolution, insulin had to be extracted from animal pancreases. Today, virtually all biologic drugs depend on technologies derived from that innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artificial intelligence could play a similar role. Not because it will replace scientists, but because it changes how quickly experimental hypotheses can be formulated, evaluated, and discarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation will continue in living organisms, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies. Biology remains experimental. What changes is how efficiently researchers decide which experiments are worth conducting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications for Mexico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a Latin American perspective, this transformation raises a strategic question. For decades, we have participated primarily as providers of patients for clinical trials, biological resources, and highly skilled human talent. An economy based on scientific platforms requires something different: computational infrastructure, interoperable databases, sustained investment in basic research, and regulatory frameworks that promote both innovation and equitable access to medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Twenty-first-century biology<\/strong> will depend as much on academic laboratories as on data centers. <strong>Reducing the discussion<\/strong> to the prices of new drugs would mean losing sight of the structural change underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case of Eli Lilly will probably be remembered not only for developing some of the most successful drugs of our time, but also because it represents one of the first examples of a pharmaceutical company organized as an integrated platform for generating biological knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that difference could <strong>define the way drugs are discovered<\/strong> over the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Author<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u00d3scar Arias Carri\u00f3n<\/em><\/strong><em> is Dean of Graduate Studies at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.
