Yet a survey found that most women physicians had experienced workplace discrimination or sexual harassment at some point in their training or careers\u2014and, in most cases, the perpetrator was a senior physician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A survey of 428 women physicians from 31 of Mexico\u2019s 32 states found that <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/08862605251355627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">82% had experienced gender discrimination and 84% had experienced some form of sexual harassment <\/a>during their training or professional careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat surprised us most was the prevalence,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/mx.linkedin.com\/in\/fernanda-mesa-chavez\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mx.linkedin.com\/in\/fernanda-mesa-chavez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fernanda Mesa<\/a>, a professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS)<\/a>, breast cancer researcher, and one of the study\u2019s authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey was conducted between April and July 2024 and distributed through online communities for women physicians, including messaging groups and social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sexual Comments and \u201cJokes\u201d Are the Most Prevalent Form of Harassment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/Villarreal-Garza-Cynthia.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-174339\" style=\"width:335px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/Villarreal-Garza-Cynthia.jpg.webp 1000w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/Villarreal-Garza-Cynthia.jpg-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/Villarreal-Garza-Cynthia.jpg-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/Villarreal-Garza-Cynthia.jpg-768x768.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cynthia Villarreal is a research professor at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (EMCS). (Photo: TecSalud)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the most frequently reported experiences of sexual harassment <strong>were sexual comments or \u201cjokes,\u201d<\/strong> cited by 95% of those who said they had experienced harassment; sexualized looks, reported by 88%; persistent or unwanted sexual advances, by 56%; and unwanted physical contact, by 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, 6% reported having experienced sexual assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of the behaviors reported were deeply concerning,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecsalud.mx\/medicos\/dra-cynthia-mayte-villarreal-garza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cynthia Villarreal<\/a>, a research professor at EMCS, oncologist, and another of the study\u2019s authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond these alarming figures, the researchers say one of the most revealing findings was who perpetrated these behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medical Hierarchy Affects the Prevalence of Sexual Harassment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among survey participants who reported experiencing harassment, 78% identified a senior physician as the perpetrator, while 42% identified a <strong>professor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a section asking what participants did after experiencing sexual harassment\u2014which was answered by 343 respondents\u2014only 9.9% said they had reported it to the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those who did not report it, <strong>41% said they feared retaliation,<\/strong> and the same percentage believed doing so could damage their careers. In addition, 38% said the perpetrator held a position of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the person engaging in inappropriate behavior <strong>also has influence over someone else\u2019s training, <\/strong>evaluations, professional opportunities, or career prospects, reporting it becomes much more difficult,\u201d Villarreal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study also found an association between experiencing gender discrimination and experiencing sexual harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After accounting for variables such as age and medical specialty, those who had experienced discrimination were 7.63 times more likely to report sexual harassment. The authors emphasize that this is an association and <strong>does not demonstrate that discrimination causes harassment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt does not mean that one causes the other, but seeing this association is both interesting and concerning,\u201d Mesa says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-1024x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-174341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2026\/09\/QUOTES-WEB-DUPLICAR-52.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Survey and Its Limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike previous studies that had examined this issue primarily among medical residents, the survey focused on a broader population of women physicians from different specialties and stages of their careers, which could help explain the high prevalence reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis represents a considerably longer period of exposure,\u201d Villarreal explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efforts to increase women\u2019s participation in the field have also led to a growing number of women physicians, but patriarchal hierarchies persist. \u201cBecause more men hold leadership positions, <strong>these types of incidents appear more likely to occur,<\/strong>\u201d Mesa says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the survey results should be interpreted with caution because participants were recruited through Facebook and WhatsApp groups for women physicians, meaning this was not a probability-based sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors acknowledge that those who had experienced discrimination or harassment may have been more interested in responding. Participants also reported experiences that had occurred throughout their careers, creating the possibility of recall bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the study can establish, therefore, is that these incidents were <strong>extraordinarily common among the 428 women physicians surveyed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe results show that these are not isolated incidents and that significant barriers still prevent women from reporting them safely,\u201d Villarreal emphasizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education and Reporting Mechanisms Could Help Transform Medical Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers say that, in addition to continuing to investigate how widespread the problem is nationwide, measures must be taken to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the most important are education and awareness. Whether through courses, classes, or training sessions, everyone involved in the medical field <strong>must know how to recognize gender discrimination and sexual harassment,<\/strong> how to prevent them, and what to do when they occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUniversities and hospitals should provide at least one workshop, including for people in administrative positions,\u201d Mesa says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most effective interventions for reducing these incidents must also be evaluated, studied, and tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crucially, clear, accessible, and confidential reporting mechanisms must be in place. \u201cNearly one-third of participants who had experienced sexual harassment said they did not know how these mechanisms worked,\u201d Villarreal says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study therefore suggests that recognizing the problem is only the first step. Transforming the culture of medical institutions will require clear policies, codes of conduct, education and training, as well as a genuine commitment from institutional leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe response must include prevention, education, reporting mechanisms that work, and protection for those who decide to come forward,\u201d Villarreal concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
