{"id":157603,"date":"2023-07-07T21:12:53","date_gmt":"2023-07-07T21:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/?p=157603"},"modified":"2024-12-12T11:56:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T17:56:04","slug":"coding-for-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tecnologia\/coding-for-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"El algoritmo que ayuda a interpretar el canto de las ballenas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Durante el invierno, miles de ballenas viajan del norte del oc\u00e9ano Pac\u00edfico hacia el sur, donde algunas se instalan en las costas de Guerrero. Se trata de una migraci\u00f3n que tiene un objetivo reproductivo en aguas m\u00e1s c\u00e1lidas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desde 2014, la organizaci\u00f3n internacional <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whalesinmexico.com\/es\/inicio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whales of Guerrero <\/a><\/em>trabaja en favor de su conservaci\u00f3n, junto con miembros de la comunidad pesquera de Barra de Potos\u00ed y cient\u00edficos de distintas universidades. Durante casi una d\u00e9cada, han estudiado el comportamiento de las ballenas y han grabado sus cantos, a trav\u00e9s de sondas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En enero de 2023, estudiantes de la carrera de<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/ciencias-aplicadas\/ingeniero-en-ciencia-de-datos-y-matematicas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingenier\u00eda en Ciencia de Datos y Matem\u00e1ticas <\/a>de la <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tag\/escuela-de-ingenieria-y-ciencias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Escuela de Ingenier\u00eda y Ciencias<\/a> del Tec de Monterrey se unieron al proyecto \u201c<em>Coding for the Whales<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;y lograron <strong>crear un algoritmo que permite analizar dichos audios<\/strong>, mismo que permitir\u00e1 que los bi\u00f3logos observen los patrones de esos cantos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEsos cantos se pueden percibir autom\u00e1ticamente. Tenemos programas que lo hacen. Les creamos un sistema (algoritmo) para detectar la presencia de ballenas. Se puede identificar cuando est\u00e1n cantando y el a\u00f1o en que lo hicieron porque cada a\u00f1o cantan una canci\u00f3n que es larga, pero al final alteran un pedacito\u201d, cuenta <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_478781\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Salvador Garza Ledesma<\/a>, l\u00edder del proyecto y director de la carrera en <strong>Ciencia de Datos y Matem\u00e1ticas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Deep dive: What we are learning from the language of whales | James Nestor | TEDxMarin\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JM77aTk1XyI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coding for whales<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>El objetivo del equipo era traducir a datos todos los registros sonoros que la organizaci\u00f3n ha acumulado a lo largo de nueve a\u00f1os, pues, en el mar, no solamente se escuchan los cantos sino tambi\u00e9n los movimientos de las ballenas. Esto sumado a que sus cantos se mezclan con el sonido de barcos o de otros animales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo todo es audible, algunos son solo se\u00f1ales. Nosotros con (el lenguaje de programaci\u00f3n) <em>Python<\/em> los convertimos a series num\u00e9ricas que se pueden reinterpretar de forma digital. Hay mucho ruido, cosas que no nos interesan. Se limpia y se genera un objeto matem\u00e1tico\u201d, explica Garza Ledesma como especialista en matem\u00e1ticas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sus algoritmos son capaces de distinguir en qu\u00e9 momento se escucha una ballena, pues todos los cantos tienen ciertos patrones.<\/strong> Luego, con ayuda de la interpretaci\u00f3n de los bi\u00f3logos, se puede saber cu\u00e1l es la intenci\u00f3n: si emitir sonidos como cortejo o bien, simplemente, jugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSon los bi\u00f3logos quienes intentan interpretar los datos de lo que no han podido escuchar porque son audios largos. Lo correlacionan con lo que ya saben, le ense\u00f1an algo a un beb\u00e9 o est\u00e1n peleando o huyendo de orcas\u201d, dice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De acuerdo con Garza Ledesma, este tipo de proyecto es \u00fatil para que los estudiantes aprendan a utilizar sus conocimientos en Ciencia de Datos de manera pr\u00e1ctica, en el marco de una iniciativa ambientalista.
