A diferencia de los m\u00e9todos actuales de producci\u00f3n de este analg\u00e9sico y antipir\u00e9tico, este proceso no conlleva emisiones de carbono y es m\u00e1s sostenible, dicen los investigadores del trabajo que se publica hoy en <em>Nature<\/em> <em>Chemistry<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El <strong>tereftalato de polietileno (PET)<\/strong> es el pl\u00e1stico resistente y ligero que se utiliza para botellas de agua y envases de alimentos, y genera m\u00e1s de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/B9780323855143000142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">350 millones de toneladas<\/a> de residuos al a\u00f1o que acaban en vertederos y oc\u00e9anos. Por su parte, el paracetamol se fabrica a partir del fenol, un derivado de combustibles f\u00f3siles, por lo que este proceso contribuye tambi\u00e9n al agravamiento del cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para buscar un proceso m\u00e1s sostenible, el equipo investigador de la universidad escocesa modific\u00f3 la bacteria E. coli para transformar una mol\u00e9cula derivada del PET, conocida como <strong>\u00e1cido tereft\u00e1lico<\/strong>, en el principio activo del paracetamol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Hongos que comen pl\u00e1stico: \u00bfUna soluci\u00f3n al problema de la contaminaci\u00f3n?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sBGIJ2YqQtk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paracetamol en 24 horas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>El equipo llev\u00f3 a cabo un proceso de <strong>fermentaci\u00f3n<\/strong>, similar al empleado en la elaboraci\u00f3n de cerveza, para acelerar la conversi\u00f3n de residuos industriales de PET en paracetamol en menos de 24 horas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La nueva t\u00e9cnica se llev\u00f3 a cabo a temperatura ambiente y pr\u00e1cticamente no gener\u00f3 emisiones de carbono, lo que demuestra que este compuesto puede producirse de forma sostenible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDescubrimos que una reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica que se utiliza en la industria desde hace m\u00e1s de 100 a\u00f1os \u2014el <strong>reordenamiento de Lossen<\/strong>\u2014 puede producirse en el interior de las bacterias vivas\u201d, dice <strong>Stephen Wallace,<\/strong> primer autor del trabajo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Con este procedimiento, combinado con enzimas naturales de microbios del suelo y hongos, el equipo logr\u00f3 construir el proceso biol\u00f3gico que convierte residuos pl\u00e1sticos en paracetamol con <strong>un rendimiento del 92%<\/strong>. \u201cEs un ejemplo de c\u00f3mo la biolog\u00eda y la qu\u00edmica pueden trabajar juntas para resolver algunos de nuestros mayores retos, como reducir la contaminaci\u00f3n y fabricar medicamentos de forma m\u00e1s sostenible\u201d, opina Wallace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Por el momento, solo se han fabricado peque\u00f1as cantidades de paracetamol en el laboratorio y se necesita m\u00e1s desarrollo para que pueda producirse a escala comercial. Tampoco es posible a\u00fan el uso humano del analg\u00e9sico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPara poder utilizarlo como medicamento tendr\u00eda que someterse a estrictas pruebas de seguridad y a la<strong> aprobaci\u00f3n de las autoridades reguladoras<\/strong>. Es un proceso largo, y con raz\u00f3n. Pero este trabajo sienta las bases de lo que alg\u00fan d\u00eda podr\u00eda ser una forma m\u00e1s limpia y sostenible de producir medicamentos\u201d, dice el investigador.
