Tecnológico de Monterrey has climbed 13 spots in the Academic Reputation indicator of the QS World University Rankings 2026, reaching 136th place globally in this category.

For the third consecutive year, the institution has advanced in this area, 28 places in total, an indicator that assesses how academic excellence is perceived at universities, based on surveys conducted among education sector experts.

In addition to this upward trend in Academic Reputation—which carries the most weight in the overall score at 30%—the university also improved in other metrics such as Sustainability and International Research Network.

Nationally, Tec ranks second in Academic Reputation, which reflects how the global academic community views research-focused higher education institutions in Mexico.

In this year’s edition of the rankings, the university remains among the world’s Top 200 institutions overall, holding the 187th position globally. Tec also retains its status as the number one private university in Mexico and now ranks 29th globally among private institutions, up one spot from last year.

“Our thanks go to the professors, researchers, students, and staff whose dedication and passion are key to strengthening our academic excellence, research, and institutional impact—allowing us to reaffirm our place among the world’s top 200 universities,” said David Garza, Executive President of the Tecnológico de Monterrey Educational Group.

Tec Moves Up in Sustainability and International Research Network

In the Sustainability metric, Tecnológico de Monterrey rose 29 places to rank 262nd globally. The institution earned a score of 73.8 out of 100 in this category—an improvement of 19.4 points compared to the previous edition.

This score is based on results from the previous QS Sustainability Ranking cycle, which assesses the social and environmental impact of universities as centers of education and research. The evaluation includes areas such as sustainability-focused research, environmental stewardship, equity, governance, educational impact, health, and well-being, among others.

The university also made significant progress in the International Research Network indicator, jumping 219 positions to reach 451st place. It earned a score of 74.6 in this category, representing an 18-point increase compared to the 2025 edition.

This metric evaluates the richness and diversity of a university’s international research partnerships. It focuses on collaborative research and its role in enhancing the quality and transparency of science, as well as in tackling urgent global challenges.

Tec also improved its score in the Citations per Faculty indicator, doubling from 2.4 to 4.8. This reflects a rise in the average number of citations per faculty member, which increased from 16.3 to 21.2. The score is calculated using data from Scopus and serves as an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work produced at universities.

“The presence of Tecnológico de Monterrey in the Top 200 of the QS World University Rankings 2026 reflects the steady progress of our institutional strategy in science, technology, and innovation,” said Feniosky Peña-Mora, Executive Vice President of Research at Tec. “With more than 1,100 researchers working across six schools, three institutes, and six research centers, we are generating knowledge that influences public policy, industrial development, and social well-being. This recognition further establishes Tec as a key player in the global research ecosystem with meaningful impact from Latin America.”
