On September 7, 2024, we commemorate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. This date serves as an essential reminder of the importance of maintaining clean air to protect the health of our planet and ensure a healthy future for the next generations. Air quality not only affects our physical well-being but also plays a crucial role in climate change and the preservation of our ecosystems.

An alarming fact is that, according to the World Health Organization, air pollution causes approximately 7 million premature deaths each year worldwide, equivalent to one death every 4.5 seconds. This staggering impact highlights the urgency of improving air quality and reducing air pollutants.

Every year, millions of people face the consequences of air pollution, one of the most serious environmental threats of our time. In addition to contributing to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, air pollution hurts biodiversity. This is why we must act decisively to confront this issue.

On this International Day of Clean Air, we call on governments, organizations, and citizens worldwide to unite to reduce pollution. Adopting sustainable practices, promoting clean energy, and cutting down on harmful gas emissions are fundamental steps. Simple actions like using public transportation, supporting policies that reduce emissions, and planting trees can make a significant difference.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the critical connection between air pollution and climate change. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions improves air quality and helps mitigate climate change. Moreover, these actions immediately benefit public health by lowering respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The IPCC emphasizes the need for integrated policies that promote renewable energy and cleaner transportation systems while advocating for climate justice to ensure all communities have access to clean and healthy air.

Tec de Monterrey reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the environment through its participation in both global and local initiatives. On this International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, the institution underscores its role as a leader in environmental education and in training a new generation of conscious and responsible professionals. Activities promoted by Tec de Monterrey include awareness campaigns, research and development, educational activities, student projects, collaborations, partnerships, and the promotion of sustainable mobility.

As the leader of the Research Center for Climate & Sustainability at the School of Engineering and Sciences, I want to highlight the invaluable work of our faculty researchers and students in the Sustainable Energy Group. They are dedicated to studying air quality, among many other topics. Their efforts to generate knowledge and find innovative, sustainable solutions are key to improving our environment and the health of our communities.

A blue sky and clean air should not be a luxury but a right for everyone. Let us commit to caring for our air, health, and planet.

Let’s work together for clearer skies and a greener future!
