Tec de Monterrey is one of the 100 top universities for social and environmental impact according to the 2023 THE Impact Rankings, which evaluate universities’ progress towards meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Guillermo Torre, Vice President of Research at Tecnológico de Monterrey and Rector of TecSalud, highlights: “The results are proof of the commitment that the Institute has made towards research as a strength that helps solve the great challenges of humanity.”

He adds that “science and technology have to be functional, they must help to find viable solutions, since these are the basis for responding and facing the great problems of the world, from social, economic and environmental issues, as well as to improve the quality of life. For us, the environmental issue represents one of the Institution’s most important commitments to achieve a sustainable future”.

THE Impact Ranking 2023

Tec de Monterrey was ranked within the top 100 of 1,625 universities for its progress towards meeting objectives such as developing affordable and clean energy, ending poverty, providing clean water and sanitation, and partnerships for the goals.

These goals were proposed by the UN with the aim of fulfilling the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and consist of 17 criteria, including reduced inequalities, climate action, life below water, and quality education.

Based on these criteria, the THE Impact Rankings use a methodology which evaluates universities in four areas: the research carried out by universities on said topics; the way in which resources themselves are managed; the scope they have for benefitting both local and international communities; and the teaching of these objectives to students.

Tec de Monterrey has improved its ranking in meeting three goals in comparison with last year. The first goal is affordable and clean energy, in which it rose 57 positions to reach 10th place. The second goal is responsible production and consumption, in which it rose 37 positions. The final goal is partnerships for the goals, in which it is ranked 16th.

In the 2023 ranking, Tec de Monterrey was placed 92nd overall, with a score of 89 out of 100, representing a climb of eight places from last year.

Inés Sáenz Negrete, Vice President of Inclusion, Social Impact and Sustainability, says that this results show the effort and teamwork of all the people who are part of the Tec Community.

“In 2020 we presented our Report on Sustainable Development Initiatives. Three years later, we have mapped more than 820 initiatives that have a direct impact on the 17 SDGs. Tec has subscribed to more than 134 specific goals of the 2030 agenda,” she adds.

Times Higher Education (THE) is an organization which encourages universities to achieve excellence through the statistics and rankings it uses to evaluate these institutions.
