The QS World University Rankings: Latin America & The Caribbean 2027 is an assessment of university performance, in which Tecnológico de Monterrey has ranked No. 1 in Mexico for eight years and fourth among the region’s top institutions for six consecutive editions.
Each year, British firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) publishes the rankings after evaluating higher education institutions across Latin America and the Caribbean based on eight indicators grouped into four broad areas or dimensions: Research and Discovery, Employability and Outcomes, Learning Experience, and Global Engagement.
In this edition, Tecnológico de Monterrey improved its position in five of these indicators: Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, Academic Reputation, Staff with PhDs, and Papers per Faculty.
Moreover, three of the metrics in which the institution improved are part of the Research and Discovery dimension, which carries the greatest weight in calculating the overall score that determines universities’ positions in the general rankings.
“Tec’s position in this ranking reflects our commitment to excellence in education, research, and innovation. We are proud of our community of faculty, students, and staff who make this achievement possible. This result motivates us to continue strengthening our academic and scientific capabilities to transform the lives of individuals and communities,” said David Garza, executive president of Tecnológico de Monterrey Educational Group.

Tec climbs in research and scientific output indicators
Research and Discovery carries the most weight in this QS ranking, accounting for 45% of the overall assessment. Tec scored 95.4 points out of 100 in this dimension, placing fourth among the region’s top universities.
The dimension comprises three indicators in which the institution moved up in the 2027 edition of the rankings:
- Citation per Paper, where Tec rose one position to eighth in the regional ranking. This metric measures the impact of universities’ scientific output based on the average number of citations their publications receive. QS uses data from the Scopus database, taking into account scientific papers published over a five-year period and the citations they receive.
- Academic Reputation, where Tec climbed one position to ninth. This is the most heavily weighted indicator, accounting for 30% of the overall ranking. It measures perceptions of universities’ academic and research quality. To assess this indicator, QS draws on the results of its global survey of more than 150,000 academics, who identify the universities they believe are doing outstanding work in their respective fields of knowledge.
- Papers per Faculty, an indicator in which Tec climbed seven positions to 150th. This metric measures universities’ scientific productivity by comparing the number of published papers — indexed in Scopus — with the number of faculty members at the institution.
“This result reflects the progress of a strategy that places research at the heart of our academic excellence. Strengthening our reputation means demonstrating, through new knowledge and impact, Tec’s ability to help address the major challenges facing our region and showcase that talent from Latin America to the world,” said Javier Guzmán, executive vice president for Research at Tecnológico de Monterrey Educational Group.
In addition, in the International Research Network indicator, which is part of the Global Engagement dimension, Tec held on to ninth place this year after climbing seven positions in the previous edition.
This metric assesses international scientific collaboration among universities based on co-authored publications indexed in Scopus. It considers academic partnerships that have produced at least three papers over five years, factoring in the diversity of countries involved, the continuity of collaborations, and the fields of knowledge in which the research is published.
Tec in the QS Latin America & The Caribbean 2027 rankings
The QS World University Rankings: Latin America & The Caribbean considers factors such as research performance, teaching quality, and universities’ academic reputation.
In the 2027 edition, Tec extended its streak to six years as the No. 4 university in the region. It also retained its position as the second-highest-ranked institution among more than 200 private universities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In Mexico, Tec has ranked first for eight consecutive years among the 69 national universities included in the rankings, two more institutions than in the previous edition.
“Beyond the rankings themselves, these results demonstrate the strong work of our community of faculty, students and graduates, who share this sense of urgency and the need to contribute to developing solutions for the world of today and tomorrow,” said Juan Pablo Murra, rector of Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Tec’s highest-ranked indicator this year is Employer Reputation, where it climbed one position to third place with a perfect score of 100.
This metric reflects employers’ perceptions of universities and how well they prepare their graduates for the workforce. It is based on QS’s global employer survey, in which employers identify the institutions they believe best prepare graduates for their respective industries.
Other indicators in the Top 10 of their respective categories include Citation per Paper, ranked eighth with a score of 99.9; Academic Reputation, ranked ninth with 99.7 points; and International Research Network, ranked ninth with a score of 99.5.
These are followed by Web Impact, ranked 24th; Faculty Student Ratio, ranked 41st; Staff with PhD, ranked 126th; and Papers per Faculty, ranked 150th.
