Tec de Monterrey remains the top university in Mexico for the sixth year running and is number four in Latin America, according to the Latin America University Rankings 2023 prepared by Times Higher Education (THE).
The institution remains in the top five of the main universities in Latin America, behind the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the University of São Paulo, and the University of Campinas, both from Brazil.
These rankings are carried out annually by THE, which takes into account teaching reputation, research productivity, international student numbers, and industry income, among other factors. The organization publishes its global results in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and its regional results in rankings such as THE Latin America University Rankings 2023.
In addition, the announcement was made during the gala of the Times Higher Education Latin America Summit 2023, an event held by Tec de Monterrey to mark its 80th anniversary.

As Guillermo Torre, Rector of TecSalud and Vice President of Research at Tec de Monterrey, explained during the event, “many of you, like us in our Latin American countries, know that we will not have similar levels of investment in research as countries in Europe, North America, or Asia. Even so, we can do productive research by building bridges between the public and private sectors.”
He added that although the rankings are intended to measure colleges against each other, fulfilling a university’s mission is the main thing at the end of the day. “The rankings are a consequence of this fulfillment of a university’s mission and we must not forget that.”
Torre recalled that, “although the responsibility our universities have as leaders is very important, our responsibility to the communities we serve is just as important. The rankings are a way of measuring ourselves against others, but that’s not really the main objective.”
The Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2023 is a yearly survey that scores leading research-oriented universities.
This organization has a worldwide version where it publishes its global findings in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
In the case of the Latin American rankings, it uses the same performance metrics as in the global rankings, but they are specifically calibrated for the region and characteristics of universities in emerging countries.
These metrics are classified into five categories: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.
This year, Tecnológico de Monterrey climbed one place in the regional Top 5 from last year, moving up from fifth to fourth place.
In terms of Mexican universities, the Tec is still the first on the list, followed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 15th place and the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) in 31st place.
The list includes 197 institutions from 15 countries, with Brazil having the most universities on the list at 65, followed by Colombia with 36, Chile with 32, and Mexico with 24.
“Universities in Mexico continue to do really well in these rankings, which is great to see. We hope those working in higher education in Mexico can utilize the vast amount of rich data from the rankings to improve universities in the country even further,” said Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education.

The 2023 Latin American Summit
Tec de Monterrey hosted the Times Higher Education Latin America Summit 2023 as part of its 80th-anniversary celebrations.
This year’s ranking results were revealed at a gala dinner in Monterrey’s Fundidora Park.
The event brings together professionals, academic leaders, researchers, consultants, and industry members to analyze regional collaboration among institutions and how to support social development within their communities.
More than 150 people from ten Latin American nations took part in seminars and conferences during the Latin America Summit 2023.
The guests participating in these events included Arturo Cherbowski, Executive Director of Santander Universidades; Victoria Galán Muros, Chief of Research and Analysis at the International Institute for Higher Education; and Gabriela Gerón Piñón, Director of Partnerships, Innovation, and Communications at the University of Miami.
